Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

Hello everyone!

I have a Toshiba Satellite M115-S1061 laptop and I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment..

So theoretically, when the laptop is put into standby mode, it doesn't turn the laptop completely off and when I open the laptop lid, it just comes out of standby right away and I can continue working on stuff..

For the past 2 days however, when I put my laptop into standby mode and when I go to open my lid, I find that it has somehow turned off and ends up going through the whole start up process, which of course just defeats the purpose of using standby in the first place.

When I put it into standby mode, the normal screen pops up and says "preparing to go into standby mode" and after doing so, the LED by the power button still blinks a slow orange as it always had when in standby mode.

I have not made any changes to the Power settings at all and the only thing I've done in the past 2 days aside from using word, photoshop and surfing the internet is to uninstall a trial version of a program from my laptop.

If anyone has any suggestions or solutions as to what the problem is and how to fix it, I would be very appreciative. I'm not entirely computer illiterate, but I'm by no means a computer genius either so I apologize for any inane questions I may have..

Many thanks in advance.

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

Yes, I am running XP service pack 2.

I have also checked my power settings like you'd mentioned, but I don't have it down as hibernate

erm..I'm pretty sure this isn't related..or maybe it is, but
since yesterday, every once in a while, my cursor suddenly freezes and then everything freezes..I can't even do the ctrl alt delete thing to access the task manager. I have to turn off the laptop by pressing on the power button and rebooting the entire thing.

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

just to be clear on what you are experiencing...

when it goes to STANDBY now does it literally turn OFF (all lights are gone)? does it boot once you open the lid or does it ask for your Windows password when you open the lid? have you tried going to STANDBY using a combination of keys (like Fn + F4 or any function key that has a crescent moon symbol)?

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

when it goes into standby, usually the power light goes from green to a slow blinking orange one...thats I was so surprised to find it had turned itself off b/c the usual lights were still on. When I open the lid now, it goes through the entire boot up/start up process as if I had turned it off..I don't have a password set on my laptop so it doesn't ask me for that/

As for going into standby with a combination of keys, I'm not sure which keys to use for that..I can't find a key with a crescent moon symbol on it...I usually go to start-->turn off computer button--> window pops up with buttons for hibernate, standby, turn off, restart (in that order) and go to standby from there.

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

it does look that it goes into hibernate. does it go to this state after some time (like a few minutes later) after it goes into standby or does it go to this state immediately once standby is triggered.

usually they hibernate after a few minutes of inactivity or a few minutes of standby.

by the way, once it wakes up from 'hibernate'/reboot state does it bring you to the last session that you were on when you went to standby?

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

usually when i put it into standby, it doesn't go into hibernate at all ..it just stays in standby..

I'm not sure what you mean by it bringing me to the last session, but now instead of just popping up my desktop right away, I have to go through the entire boot up state (the windows xp boot up, 'windows is starting up' screena, 'welcome' screen)

also..I tried to put my computer into hibernate for kicks..just to see what would happen..usually when i open the lid after this, it says 'rebooting in progress' or something like that with a status bar and then my desktop pops up..but when i tried to do this earlier, it instead gave me a black screen with this msg:

"the last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. attempt to restart again?
a) delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
b) continue with system restart"

i've tried both options and it makes me go through the entire start up process again..

I'm not sure what you mean by it bringing me to the last session, but now instead of just popping up my desktop right away, I have to go through the entire boot up state (the windows xp boot up, 'windows is starting up' screena, 'welcome' screen) -- waking up from standby or hibernate brings you back to your last screen or session (like if you have an open Word document, it would still bring you back to that Word document session). the only difference is standby saves it to memory while hibernate writes it to hard drive.

also..I tried to put my computer into hibernate for kicks..just to see what would happen..usually when i open the lid after this, it says 'rebooting in progress' or something like that with a status bar and then my desktop pops up..but when i tried to do this earlier, it instead gave me a black screen with this msg:

"the last attempt to restart the system from its previous location failed. attempt to restart again?
a) delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu
b) continue with system restart"

-- I am really not sure if this message points a defect in RAM or in hard drive. Try running Memtest86+ overnight to test your RAM modules. If you are using XP, try running CHKDSK /R in Recovery Console using an XP installation CD (retail/full version). In addition to the above, run your hard drive makers diagnostic to test your drive.

i've tried both options and it makes me go through the entire start up process again..

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

ohh thats what I thought 'last session' meant but wasn't for sure..
in answer to your question about that, yes, it used to run my last session whenever I went to standby or hibernate..but now both options make me go through the entire start up process.

I will give the other option a shot tomorrow when I get the first chance.. for the 'Recovery Console', is that on the XP installation CD? How do I go about running this program and the diagnostic?

I must thank you again for being so patient and helpful!

Re: Putting Toshiba laptop into standby mode turns it off

so just to get things straight since I'm afraid of screwing something up..

1) stick installation cd in
2)restart computer and when the 'welcome to setup' screen appears, press "R"
3)since I don't have an admin password, just press enter
4)then when it asks me "which windows installation would you like to log onto?" enter the number 1
5) after the command prompt comes up, type in chkdsk c:/r

then after this, does it just basically do its own thing and recover my hard drive/fix it? will I have to do anything else?

Will wait for a reply and in the meantime start backing up all my files and things before attempting this..

Thanks for the info. You still have a plenty of space. I just want to be sure on that. Have you tried the CHKDSK command already?
