Hello,
I have a Alienware Area 51 Laptop running Windows XP prof SP2. Last night my laptop suddenly froze and I held the power button down to turn it off as nothing was working. I restarted the Laptop half an hout later and as windows was loading I got a flash of a error screen come up and it rebooted. I have restarted with F2 and reset all settings then reset again with F8 and tried running safe mode, last known config etc which all will not work. While running safemode it stops and restarts every time on C:\windows\system\driver\antispyware.sys I have entered the XP recover CD and changed config to boot from CD which it does. I tried to reinstall windows but when it comes to select a drive I don't have any to choose from. The only way i have found to get to my C: drive is by using a boot CD i have made which gets me to DOS. I'm kinda stuck from here. Any help would really be appreciated |

Re: XP restarts on Startup
To use CHKDSK /R in Recovery Console you have to have an XP installation CD (FULL version). A recovery CD AFAIK would not help.
Here's a few things you can try: 1. Run Memtest86+ to check your RAM. You can run 2 passes for each module but you should run with one RAM module installed at a time. Or you can run this this overnight. D/load Memtest from the link on my sig. Burn it to a blank CD using ImgBurn or Nero or similar program. Copying it directly to CD without using these tools will not give you a working CD. 2. Run your hard drive maker's diagnostic to check your hard drive. Follow the HDD Diagnostic Tools link on my sig to download your specific utility. If you are using Toshiba drives, get the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test utility.

Re: XP restarts on Startup
Dear Sir,
Do you have your Windows XP CD? If so, boot up with that and choose "R" at the first menu, that will get you into the recovery console, from there, at the prompt, type in "chkdsk /r" without the quotation marks. Let check disk run, it may take some time, but when it's finished, type in "exit" and let the system reboot. Hopefully it will fix any system files that may have gotten corrupted. If that doesn't work, post back. Good Luck! |

Re: XP restarts on Startup
Yep I have done that and I get a message saying the drive has a unrecoverable error.
When I go to reinstall windows from the XP disk I agree to the user agreement and have a screen which asks me to select a drive or partition for windows to be installed. From here I have no drives showing in the list to install too, the list is empty. When trying to start the laptop without a disk and boot normally I get a message now saying that the BIOS is not installed and no operating system is found. Whatever it is, it seems to be getting worse. |

Re: XP restarts on Startup
Hey mate and welcome to TSF...
What make/model is your HDD??? Visit manufacturers Web Site and download testing tools and test HDD for possible bad sectors... If chkdsk /r experienced unrecoverable errors then could be bad sectors... Report back please... P.S. How old is laptop???

Re: XP restarts on Startup
Ok I have bought a new hard drive and set it up. I still get the same errors and the same stop codes. Changing the Hard Drives seem to have done nothing at all?? At first I had the 0x00000027 stop code while booting up windows. Now when trying to install windows I get a 0x0000008E stop code as well as the laptop telling me the bios is not installed and no operating system can be found. Could this be a motherboard problem?

Re: XP restarts on Startup
Have you tried my advise in #5 post of this thread... to run Memtest?
Also try to run a different operating system like a linux live CD or an XP/BartPE. Post back what you find out after running the above.
