Sony Vaio PVGN-FS315E wont turn on

Hi guys, I have a Sony Vaio PVGN-FS315E wont turn on, when I press the power button the power led lights up green, battery led flashes orange and the hard drive led is orange for about 20 seconds and then goes off. The 3 small leds next to the power switch remain green at all times, I think they relate to caps lock etc., I have no video, no beep codes with the ram removed and need to hold the power button down for about 6 seconds to power off the laptop, I can hear the fan running also, I suspect Motherboard or CPU problems, anybody got any ideas, thanks in advance.

Re: Sony Vaio PVGN-FS315E wont turn on

yep, it could be one of your suspected devices. please put back the RAM first or replace it with a known working stick just for testing purposes.

do you hear the fan spin or any activity from HDD and CD drive? if not try it with an external monitor.

reset the CMOS by removing the CMOS battery or you also try the steps here:
1. remove battery and ac adapter
2. press power ON for 30secs at least
3. attach battery and plug ac adapter
4. power ON as normal

post back what you find out.

Re: Sony Vaio PVGN-FS315E wont turn on

Thanks for your reply TriggerFinger, have tried known good ram without any success also dont get any video to external monitor. I can hear the fan spinning and a slight bit of activity from the cdrom drive when i first turn laptop on. I have removed cdrom & hard drive in the hope of getting something to display on screen, still no luck. I have tried the steps you listed without any luck. On one boot up before the failure I recieved a resource conflict relating to Serial bus controller & pci mass storage device on motherboard, I was able to boot into the bios where I reset the bios defaults, would then get xp attempting to load but laptop would shut down fairly early into the boot process, I have just checked the fan and it is running normally, no dust or obstruction, everthing fine with all internal connections. ( I took precautions to protect against static damage), thanks again.

Re: Sony Vaio PVGN-FS315E wont turn on

So you mean you still do not see anything on the screen with a new/working RAM?

I would definitely open it up and reseat each and every connector inside. I would also remove the heatsink and fan and give the board a good clean. Given that I have opened it up, I will reseat the CPU and reapply thermal paste.

When you do the above, check the board and the cables if you see anything obvious like a burnt component or a cut cable.
