Everex 5300T keeps shutting down, faulty power supply?
Hello!
![]() I have an Everex 5300T laptop. I got it from a friend, who removed a few parts from it. A few weeks ago, I went to Microcenter and bought a 160 GB harddrive, 1 Gig of extra ram and a Targus brand 90 watt power supply (the computer came with a 90 watt originally). The laptop is still without a battery, partly because they are a bit expensive and I was going to buy that a little later. The computer is now running with 2 gigs of ram, a GE-force 8600 graphics card (onboard) and Windows Vista. The computer was running fine except here recently I was playing a game and the laptop was getting hot. I was bit concerned about this, but I thought it was normal. Shortly after the laptop shut off. I assumed it overheated and shut off for safety reasons as laptops do. I let it cool down and resumed playing later. This kept happening for the next couple of days. Not only was the computer getting hot but the power supply was too. Most of the time, the power supply was very hot when the computer shut off. I didn't know whether it was the power supply or laptop itself. I raised the laptop at an angle to help cool it better. Last night, I came home and started using it again. When I plugged the power supply into the back of the laptop, the power supply shut off! It has kept doing that ever since. I called Microcenter and they told me it sounds like I need to exchange the power supply. I'm going to do that anyway, but is there any other reason why a power supply could fail? Could it be something with my computer causing a problem? Thanks for your help.

Thanks Triggerfinger.
I think that's what I'm going to do. Buy the battery and power supply from Everex. The power supply from Everex is cheaper than buying a universal one. |
