Thermal Paste for my HP Pavilion dv9207us
Hi guys, I came to realize one thing that HP laptops tend to run HOT AS HELL even on idle. SpeedFan (don't know if it's accurate) shows that my temperatures idle range from 50-60ºC, and when it's under stress like gaming and processing etc it can go up to 80ºC. The bottom and top get very hot and is very hard to set on my lap, and even extended periods of typing can start to burn my palms. I just went out and bought the ANTEC Formula 5 Silver Thermal Compound. Looks like an injection needle but fatter. I have never opened my CPU compartment of my laptop before and I don't know how and where to apply the thermal paste. By the way, is the one I got good enough? Cost me $10. Any help appreciated, thanks!!

Re: Thermal Paste for my HP Pavilion dv9207us
Download the maintainance and service guide from HP. It will give detailed instructions on how to take it apart.

Re: Thermal Paste for my HP Pavilion dv9207us
Thanks for the manual. I still need the thermal paste instructions though, where to apply, what to remove, etc. And is the ANTEC brand I got any good? Reliable?
Right now all I know is that I have to apply the paste on the CPU and Heatsink where they connect, that's about it

We fix many lappys I use Arctic Cooling MX-2 MX2
idle temps on dual cores 30C -33C Under load never rises above average 55C ... unlike Artic Silver 5 there is no 200hrs cure time.. works right off. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186020 |

Re: Thermal Paste for my HP Pavilion dv9207us
There's a sticky in another forum section about thermal paste.
info on thermal compound However, in the application section, it says to spread it with your finger. Don't do that as the oils on your skin may have an adverse effect. A very thin layer on the top of the cpu is all, too much is as bad as not enough. Some say a drop the size of an uncooked grain of rice spread out is all you need. I use the plastic bag method, where I put my hand into a sandwich bag from the outside so that it turns inside out as the inside is untouched by human hands or contaminants. I use my finger inside the bag to spread the paste evenly and as thin as I can while still being covered. Others use a credit card or razor blade to spread the paste into the same thin layer. Artic silver says to put a line of paste down the center and it will spread itself when heated, which it does. The big thing is to have something there, cpu's can fry very very quickly without some sort of thermal interface material. Never start a machine without it, or without a well secured heatsink. http://www.arcticsilver.com/arctic_s...structions.htm mx-2 instructions http://www.arctic-cooling.com/furthe...0&data=3&disc= The manual should be quite comprehensive about exactly how to get it apart. One thing to add just in case it isn't mentioned there is screws. Keep track of which screws go where, some are longer than others and you can do some damage by putting the wrong type of screw in the wrong place. I'd suggest laying them out on a piece of paper and marking which ones are which in a semi-organized fashion. Above all, just take your time, follow the manual and be methodical about it. It gets easier every time, just learn how to do it right first. Last edited by grimx133; 07-16-2008 at 02:39 AM. Reason: lack of proofreading skills |
