Gateway P-6831FX

I have a messed up keyboard, and gateway is sending me a replacement keyboard.

Anyway, the problem is I took the whole laptop apart cause the keyboard wouldn't come out easily, and I found an easier way to take the keyboard out then so I put the laptop back together cause the lcd screen and everything was out. I am still waiting on a new keyboard, but I just wanted to get ready for it. I hooked up my old one, and the laptop turns on still, but after it displays Gateway it waits like its going to load, but before the windows screen it shuts down. I was just wondering what would cause that? I was very gentle.

hi amdfanboy,

did you remove the heatsink from CPU? if you did, did you reapply thermal paste?

also try booting from a live CD (remove your hard drive physically from the laptop) and see if the laptop still turns OFF. btw, do you hear any beeps?

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

nope, never messed with any fans or heatsinks.

I did the live cd thing, and the laptop stays on longer, but gives me a blank screen after the gateway screen.

After a little bit I heard the cpu fan start spinning faster and faster. I never heard it spin that fast even when gaming. I think something is wrong with the cpu, but I never touched anything near the cpu. I was very gentle too. I am just wondering if the warranty covers that? I asked gateway where to buy a new keyboard and they told me the laptop is under warranty so I am getting a new keyboard for it. I doubt they would do the same thing about the cpu if that is what is fried. The cpu isn't that expensive to replace. Only about $160.00, but I can get a faster one for $200.00. Just need to find out what is wrong.

The order is cd first and the hard drive was out, but it still did the same thing. It took a little longer to shut off though.

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

The laptop is cold to touch all over except for where the cpu is located.

The laptop I am using is messed up so sorry about all of the posts. I pressed post and it wouldn't so I pressed it again. Sorry. This laptop is an Alienware and I am ordering parts for it so that will make it better.

Don't think I have money, cause I am very poor and my car is dieing. Anyway, help is appreciated.

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

when you power ON do you hear the fan spin (then stop after a few seconds)? if not, then it could be overheating.

can you enter BIOS settings?

by the way, i just read your reply that this is still under warranty. if this is under warranty i suggest you bring it back to Gateway.

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

yeah the laptop fan for the cpu just stays on.

I can enter bios settings, but the cpu temp isn't listed.

It is still under warranty, and I will try to send it back after I replace the keboard.

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

here's a few ideas that may help...

1. replace your RAM with a new one.
2. try removing WiFi card and Modem before you power it ON.

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

I am just going to get a new cpu. I am upgrading from the 1.66ghz to 2.33Ghz.

I sure hope the cpu is the same socket and will work in my gateway.

I think I am going to let gateway check though to see if its something else before I put the new cpu in cause they have special tape stuff on the cpu heatsink which will rip when you take the heatsink and cpu out.

Re: Gateway P-6831FX

If my friend were to wipe out the hardrive and install vista ultimate, or whatever version is better than home premium to my p-6831fx, would it cause problems, such as the sound, nvidia card, gaming, and would i have to download many drivers?
