System shutting down unexpectedly[moved from vista]

Hello, I have a question about Windows Vista.

I'm not sure if this is a common feature or not, but my laptop has different "power plans" that I can use to prolong battery life, ranging from "power saver" to "high performance." Typically, when I want to play an online game, I will set the power plan to a higher mode, as it has a rather noticeable effect on my FPS.

The problem is that whenever I set it to anything above the lowest level of performance, my computer will unexpectedly and immediately shut down. I'm wondering if this is a common problem with Vista or if it may be a problem with my laptops cooling system, or something I've overlooked.

I'm not too technically savvy so if this is some sort of obvious problem or if I posted this in the wrong section of the forum, I'll be happy to repost in the correct one. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot, -Zach

Re: System shutting down unexpectedly

Hello hdZach

welcome to TSF

The first thing i would ask is,
Does this happen when you have your laptop plugged into a mains charger?

In the power plan there is an option that you can change to make it easier on the laptop, it could be that its taking up too many resources and cutting out

1. Select Start and type Power Options, Select Power Options from the results.

2. Under your power plan select Change Plan Settings

3. Then select Change Advanced Power Settings

4. Under PCI Express select Link State Power Management Change it to Settings Moderate Power Saving

5. Then under Processor Power Management set maximum to %100

6. Then select Apply

restart the laptop and plug in the mains charger then try to play the online game again to see if it has stopped the unexpected shutdown

Regards

Craig
