Computer crashed and can't get back up

Hey all,

First time poster, hope you all can help me out. My laptop running XP has had a few issues in the past - I can listen to music on Itunes all I want as long as my external speakers are plugged in, but when I'm just listening on my onboard speakers - it sometimes crashes. When it does, the music stops, the mouse freezes a few seconds later, then it gives me a screen saying "windows has shut down your computer in order to prevent damage..." There is the following error message at the bottom:

stop 0x00000024 (0x00190203, 0x8230B848, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

ANd a few attempts to restart over the last 2 hours have availed nothing.

This happened once before when my wife was using it, I came home from work about 6 hours later and it started up fine. NOt sure what's going on, any help you guys can give me?

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

I can't run chkdsk because my computer never makes it past the "xp is loading" screen - it just goes straight back to the shutdown message.

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

It couldn't boot into safe mode or any recovery console. Fortunately, a techie friend was able to put a CD in that let him run chkdsk /r. That got it up and running again, but it seems a little "jerky" sometimes still, any ideas on what the cause could have been? Thanks again for the help so far.

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

... I'm a little embaressed to ask, but how do I find all of that out?

From the control panel it is an IBM thinkpad, pentium 4, 2.00 gHz, 1.99gHz, 512 MB Ram, I think the video card is an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500. I don't know how to find the rest of the info, would you mind telling me where to look?

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

don't bother i missed it was a laptop
check your air vents are clear of dust and your drives are running in dma mode and have not dropped back to pio mode
for this go into the device manager and double click on the ide listing and look in properties

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

Looks like DMA mode is what is going on. I'm guessing pio mode is bad? In any case, it says Ultra DMA Mode 5 on one and 2 on the other.

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

they are ok pio is the old speed when a drive drops back to pio it causes the syptoms you have that's why i said to check it
it seems more like a tempreture problem
set a restore point to be able to go back to
then see if this will give you your tempretures

Re: Computer crashed and can't get back up

It does feel like a lot of heat is coming out of the vents, like more than most other computers I've used. How do I set a restore point? (I'm inept, I know).
