laptop to LCD monitor

I'm trying to get my HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop to display on an Olevia 32" widescreen LCD monitor. I used a VGA-VGA cable, and when I hit fn-f4 the monitor will not display the widescreen format, only a square that cuts off the sides. How can I get this issue resolved?

what OS are you running?
