AC power problem ...

I have a Gateway M505, about 5 years old. I've been trying to install some software, but it will not install unless I'm plugged in to AC power. The problem is, I AM plugged in to AC, but the battery icon still shows on the toolbar, and even when I remove the battery, the battery icon still shows, and the software won't install. The power meter also always reads that I'm on battery power, even when the battery is removed.

I really don't know when this problem began, as I almost never look at the power meter or power icons.

I tried updating and reinstalling the driver for the Microsoft AC Adapter ... did not fix it.

Any idea what is wrong here?

looks more like software than hardware problem. have you scanned for malware and virus?

Thanks for the suggestion, TF.

I scanned with a couple of different tools, Spybot, AdAware, and MS Defender ... cleaned off a few problems, but the original problem remains.

Any other thoughts?

One last request.. try the online scans ( Kaspersky or Panda). They may not cure the infection but at least you will know what is affecting your computer.

Also, what message do you see when you try to install software and is not allowed by the system?

Sorry, I've been out of town for the past 10 days or so.

I scanned with both Kaspersky and Panda ... found several objects that the others missed, and I think took care of them. But, the computer still won't "recognize" that it is plugged into AC power.

When I've tried to install the software, the error message states, "This software can only be installed when your computer is on AC power. Please plug in your AC adaptor and retry."

Then, it exits installation. The icon on the lower toolbar still is the "battery" icon, and I've tried jiggling the AC adaptor plug, taking the battery out, various things, and I still can't get the "plugged-in" icon to show up or for AC power to be recognized.

If you mean the online scans found some more, then you should list down what they found and post the list here so we can help you find a solution on how to remove them. The online scans do not remove them like the ones we have installed.
