Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
Hi,
I have a problem with a TOSHIBA laptop, model Satellite P30-133. The laptop was running on battery when it indicated power was going down, power supply was hooked up, later the laptop was off, when start button pressed the fan would go on for a few seconds and then stop, the screen and hard drive does not boot up but the power lights stay on so it is probably an internal problem. Anybody have an idea? |

try the following if helps...remove the battery and AC adapter. press on power ON button for at least 15 to 30 secs. attach the battery and AC adapter. power ON as normal.
if that does not help try hooking up an external monitor and and see if you get any screen.

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
it's not the monitor, the hard disk itself does not boot up even on bios, motherboard does not seem to be accessed at all, read somewhere that the cmos needs to be reset so might try that, what u reckon?

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
hmmm... the problem initially is that you do not get anything on screen. obviously it could be caused by a defective LCD or video card. of course it could be other things too but unless you get anything (i.e. error messages) on the screen, you are in the dark.
try to use an external monitor. observe the lights that come ON when you power ON the laptop. notice if there are any beeps and/or if there is anything on the external monitor. at a minimum you should at least be able to see POST or the logo being shown. without anyone of these, you could be holding an expensive doorstop.

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
managed to get to the cmos resets (after taking the whole laptop apart) gold pads were labeled JOPEN1, connected them for over 30 seconds and put it all back together again. Still exactly the same, i.e. not boot up at all, BIOS not even activated. I'm thinking now that it must be the CMOS battery that is dead. Don't understand how that could have happened but i get it does. Either that or the m/b itself is in trouble.

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
yes, tried ex monitor, nothing, in terms of bios not activated i mean that there is no access to the bios let alone dos as the m/b does not power up. it may be corrupted but after reset the problem remains and therefore the cmos battery could be the cause, and/or m/b failure.

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
hi,
so now the fans do not spin, no screen and the LEDs do not light up when powered ON (slightly changed from your first post in this thread).? hmmm, if that is the case then it could be the motherboard.

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
I work on toshibas all the time, provide alot of business, lol.
as the problems you've said there would be one more thing I would suggest trying before replacing the motherboard. Try swapping out the memory sticks for ones that you know work. one bad stick of memory or even a bad memory slot will cause this problem. lights come on, no video display at all, and hard drive not being accessed. If that doesn't work, then replace the motherboard. |

Re: Start up prob - fan goes on, no boot up?
its nothing to do with the power supply, as fan & led's work, i have found out that the motherboard is had its day so that is that really, a reminder not to be too dependent on technology! cheers all the same.
