Compaq Armada M700 Boot Problem

Hi folks, I am trying to sort out a laptop for my friend. It's a Compaq Armada M700.

It's starts to boot up then asks for a Power-on Password. I read that by removing the CMOS battery and then plugging it back in that it would solve this but I have tried that and no dice.

Can anybody help me with this one?

Did you remove the laptop's "regular battery" at the same time? You need to and leave both out for at least a minute.

I'm assuming this laptop does belong to you or your friend and not someone else.

hmmm, AFAIK that method DOES NOT usually work on laptops with Security chips. if this is the case, you may need to contact Compaq for instructions on how to do this.

haha yes it is my friends! It's an old laptop that she had lying around, she doesn't have any use for it anymore but she had some files that she wanted to retrieve from it.

Re: Compaq Armada M700 Boot Problem

Well then, the easier thing to do would be to remove the hard drive from the machine and attach to a working computer to extract the data.

You can buy an external hard drive enclosure ($25-40), which connects via USB and should give her access to all of the files on her hard drive. When you buy one, make sure to let them know it's for a laptop hard drive.
