XP Driver for WLAN[moved from xp]
Just installed XP pro on my notebook. It has an onboard wireless card, but after I went to network connections, wireless was not an option.
So I figured I needed to get drivers for the WLAN to start out with. I went to the realtek website, and they supplied me with a driver for "rtl8185" when I asked for "rtl8187". Looking around some more, I managed to scrounge up the specific "rtl8187" driver. I downloaded them to my flashdrive, moved them to my new machine, and put them on my desktop. I extracted the files. What now? Am I going in the wrong direction? I had hoped there would be some sort of .exe file, but there isn't one. There is a .inf. What should I do? Thank you, nnythm |

Re: XP Driver for WLAN
Right click My Computer > select Properties > in the window that loads click the Hardware tab > then click Device Manager.
In the window that loads you should be able to locate a device that has a yellow exclamation point or a red 'X' next to it. It might say Network Interface Card or something to that effect. Right click it and there should be an option to Update Driver. The rest of this process is hazy and I don't have exact instructions to give you. You will need to point the driver update to that .inf file and click ok and it should update.

Re: XP Driver for WLAN
There are a lot of devices with yellow question marks next to them, but no yellow exclamation marks or red x's. The question marks are to the left.
Yellow Question Marked Dealies: Audio Device blah blah blah Base System Device Base System Device Base System Device Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus RTL8187B_WLAN_Adapter SM Bus Controller Video Controller (VGA Compatible) I tried the update driver thing with WLAN, and it said, "Can't Find Driver Files" or something along those lines. What it does is it lets you go into a folder and search for files. It is not very cool. Thanks, nnythm |

Re: XP Driver for WLAN
Well that is definately the cause of your problems. You will have to update those drivers before any of it works.
Have you ever had XP installed on this PC before? You may need to install chipset drivers for the motherboard if it is an onboard NIC.

Re: XP Driver for WLAN
This sounds promising. I went to the AMD website (I have an AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile processor) and downloaded the 32 bit solution, which did not work. I tried the 64 bit too, and that didn't work either. So I went to the processor drivers page and downloaded the driver for my processor instead.
Any ideas for how to find which chipset driver I need? Thank you, nnythm |

What kind of motherboard do you have?

Re: XP Driver for WLAN[moved from xp]
Perhaps I'm not actually looking for drivers at this point. My problems seem to be that in my network connections folder, nothing shows up except for the 1394 Connection, and if I plug in an ethernet cable connected to my wired internet, that doesn't work, and I can't connect to wireless because I can't find the icon that will let me look for wireless access points. Is that a driver problem? Or have I been looking for the wrong thing?
