can my laptop ruin a battery

Hi,
I have a dell latitude c600 I have it already 2 years, was bought used.
The laptop's battery is almost dead, it says 22 minutes when fully charged but stays maximum 15 minutes and dies. A friend has the same laptop and has 2 batteries he says 1 lasts 1:45-2 hours and the second 3 hours almost. we were working and he suggested for mobility I use the 2 hours battery that was charged and he will use the 3 hours. As soon as I put the battery in my laptop and fired it up the battery said 22 minutes. My firend said the battery is fully charged and should last at least 1:45HRS, and that he used it in the morning. My friend took back the battery and charged it.
Now this battery on his or my laptop says 22 minutes and dies in 15-20 minutes.
Is it possible that my laptop ruins batteries?
My friend now scared to test the other battery on my laptop.
I am asking cause if I decide to buy a battery would it be ruined too ???

Any help appreciated

Re: can my laptop ruin a battery

it could just plain coincidence. is the battery genuine? also is your laptop using the original genuine adapter? generally, it is really hard to give life expectancy to batteries, especially if they are off-brand (generics).

i suggest your friend use the battery until it drains out and start charging it. observe it if fills up to 100%. see if it helps. but to conclude that your laptop has cause this, hmmm not very convincing.
