I need help I have a dell inspiron 9400 and I used it this morning and it was fine. I went to use it this afternoon and the screen was blank. If I look really close at it I can see icons etc. I hooked up an external monitor and it works fine. Could it be graphic card or my monitor? and my warrenty just ran out figures.

Re: screen went blank on inspiron 9400
It's either your inverter or backlight. If it was the graphics or the lcd screen itself you wouldn't be able to see a dim image. By checking with the external monitor you ruled out graphics, and the dim image rules out the lcd screen. Though naturally both the inverter and backlight are in the lcd housing. The 9400 service manual has detailed instructions on taking it apart, though I've never done that, everything else but that and the x1400 I have in mine. I'll dig up a link for that manual and then edit this post.
OK, here's the manuals, the one you want is the service manual, not the user's manual. Of all the manuals I've seen, which is by no means a comprehensive list, Dell has the best. I printed the 9400 manual out for taking the machine apart and it sure came in handy. http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...0/en/index.htm I didn't look at it this time to see exactly what they have on taking apart the lcd housing. I'm not on my laptop right now and that's where my electronic copy is. Just built a new desktop, so haven't been using the 9400 much eh. Last edited by grimx133; 06-27-2008 at 10:07 PM.
