audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

I upgraded the RAM on my vaio VGN-FS740/w to 2 gig which is its max and about a month or two later my video and audio became real choppy and it seems to get pretty hot. Also it will freeze up if I unplug the adapter from it but only sometimes. Can anyone help please getting fustrated.

could be overheating and not the RAM. have you checked the temps lately?

Thumbs Up Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

NO I haven't but then again I am not really sure how to do it either. I have noticed it gets hot sometimes so hot it shuts down, but I have been using a cooling fan on it most of the time and it seems to stay cool enough to stay runnning. I will search on how to check temps and post later. Thanks for the help so far.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

At the time of checking temp my laptop was on for maybe 10 min it gave me a reading of 57c. But also noticed that upon start up my audio is choppy too. Anything else I should check? Thanks again for the help I sure need it.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

Update installed pc wizard 2008 and min after last post the temp is now 76c and climbing my cpu voltage is 1.356. When I say its climbing I mean it is already 79c in the time it took to type this.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

Well my temp now is 96c and comp is only hot at the wall adapter plug in. Well at least in that surrounding area. Does not sound like the fan is running very much so I am using my cooling pad to see if it can drop the temp. Is it normal for my voltage to be so low and then drop even lower when I un plug it and go str8 to battery ( which lasts maybe 15 min).

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

Sorry to keep on posting, but noticed when I unplug my adapter my temp dropped down to 51c thinking it might be the adapter.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

the temps are high indeed. i think and i may be wrong, the reason why the temp goes down when on battery may have something to do with how the laptop should perform when on battery (or AC in the Power Options Control Panel).

check vents and heatsink. clean up and remove dust and obstruction. use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust.

if you suspect that the fans do not spin, observe them immediately right after your power ON the laptop (at that point the fan spins then it stops after a few seconds).

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

Ok checked it upon turning on the laptop it spins, but does not come on again after that, well it does but only for a short sec or so. I had someone tell me that the choppiness could be from the hdd speed not being up to the new RAM speed I put in could this be a problem? Like I said its choppy even during my start up with the little windows melody.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

RAM and HDD speed? hmmm, may be (personally i doubt it). when you say choppy, what exactly do you mean (stop and go operation)?

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

Well my laptop now just went thru what I would call a total hissy fit, when I turned it on it gave a black screen saying it can't start at the last start point do I want to retry or just restart from the boot system well I chose to restart from the boot system after taking the whole computer apart to get it to allow me to choose that selection. Then when I shut it off to put back together it gave me a intel bios screen so I shut off and turned on again and finally after three attempts of this got it back up and running any ideas? Can really use some help here.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

now that seems familiar. let us try a few things if OK with you.

1. run Memtest86+ to test your RAM. test the RAM modules individually. let it run for like 2 passes each time (total time around 2 hours)
2. get the diagnostic tool for the brand of HDD you are using and test the drive.

Re: audio and video choppy since new RAM installed

what is the HDD brand that you have? if you have not done so yet, try the Hitachi Drive Fitness Test (just to the quick test).
