GeForce4 440 GO display or driver prob

I picked up a Compaq r3190us and it has a display prob. Boots up crisp and sharp but within a couple minutes, the screen appears as if unit is receiving alot of vibration, multiple verticle and horizontal lines and then display will black out. System blue screen of death came up for fatal fault and system reboots. Works fine if I uninstall display adapter thru hardware manager and use generic drivers. Is this a vid card prob or a HDD/software issue? If a vid card prob, does one know of a comp card I can replace it with? Thanks for the help!

Re: GeForce4 440 GO display or driver prob

Hi, sounds more like a driver problem.
Try different versions of drivers, from the originals, to the latest.

Re: GeForce4 440 GO display or driver prob

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a go. Have been pouring all over the net trying to find info on the video card, even the Nvidia site. Must not be a very popular item unless it is actually integrated on the MOBO. Thanks for the quick reply

Re: GeForce4 440 GO display or driver prob

it will be an onboard video chip which means you cannot use normal desktop drivers

Re: GeForce4 440 GO display or driver prob

Bummer! Tried all of the different driver files I could find but no joy in Mudville for me. Every version brought about the same results. The screen flickered trying to draw the view until it would crash and reboot. The machine would show the proper card info thru the device manager but if I try to change the settings, POOF! Back to the spasms

As long as I leave it as a generic adapter and the lowest settings, it works great, just doesn't paint a fluid picture. Guess it's off to a Techie as I am stumped but thanks for the help and info!

Re: GeForce4 440 GO display or driver prob

Hi, have you tried Windows Update?
I take it the HP Drivers were the first ones you tried.........
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...os=228&lang=fi

Download them again if you need to.
Then, uninstall the nvidia drivers from Add/Remove Programs and uninstall your video card from Device Manager by right-clicking and selecting uninstall.
Restart; but repeatedly press F8, until you get the alternative startup options, like Safe Mode etc.
Choose to start in VGA Mode.
Disable any non-operating system programs that are running, e.g. Anti-Virus etc.
Run the driver install application and restart.
Adjust your Advanced Display Settings and restart again.

(apologies if you've already done all of this)
