Help! My laptop is possessed!

My Toshiba satellite m100 laptop is showing some fairly peculiar symptoms. It started out with a problem of sometimes failing to charge (orange led would not show up, or would go out and not come back on and start battery charging until battery pulled out and put back in). Soon after, the Toshiba power cord no longer even registered – so we got a new power cord, which charged the battery, but we are unable to run the laptop without the battery in. Now, the battery charges until deciding to drop from 99% to 3% and stay there, at 3% beeping and going nowhere. It stops charging, too – and turns off eventually (probably when it actually runs out of battery). You must remove and replace the battery to get it charging again.

So – any ideas? I thought new battery, but am not certain, as shouldn't the power cord be able to start the laptop without the battery in? (I did manage this once today, but usually, it doesn't work).

Save me from my laptop's weirdness!
Thanks,
Jess

Oh also, it is out of warranty and was bought in Malaysia, so Toshiba here have refused to repair or order parts for it. I'm sure I could get it fixed if I knew the prob though.

Re: Help! My laptop is possessed!

oh god... malaysia.. i was born there and that place is horrible. okay back to business, i think your charger outlet might be deficient, happened to my old laptop, this might be expensive but i would recommend you take it to PCClub and do a diagnostic on it 120 bucks for that...

Re: Help! My laptop is possessed!

best to check the output voltages. not usually a problem with genuine adapters but sometimes an issue with generics. so regardless if genuine or not, start with this.

next is to clear the CMOS. best if you can also visit Toshiba website. they sometimes have announcements on related problems for particular models. so it is good to check once in a while. you will be surprised that similar cases are resolved by BIOS update.

Cry Oh no! Please help! Bios prob

Ok - I posted a q yesterday about my toshiba satellite m100 having probs with power, and bios was a suggestion - so without having any idea what abios even is, I downloaded this: http://www.downloadsource.net/16237/...ndows-2000-XP/
I know I am a total idiot - but I didn't install it, I just downloaded it to the desktop. I wasn't even sure it would be useful, but was going to take this info to my dad (it sec architecht) and ask what he thought.

Well, on restarting I have a blue box asking for a password I don't know - I am worried I have really screwed up so to speak. What the hell do I do?!?! (besides kick myself - whatever I downloaded was probably a virus or something!!!!)

Re: Oh no! Please help! Bios prob

The first thing is, don't panic. Its not a virus. Well at least the file you downloaded is not a virus. When does the box prompt you for a password? After you get to your Windows loading screen or during boot?

Re: Oh no! Please help! Bios prob

Hi it is right after the toshiba symbol appears (before booting). Thereare options to press f2 or f12 for setup options, and both of these also come up with the password prompt,

Re: Oh no! Please help! Bios prob

That just sounds like a BIOS password. Check this link out and try the first option http://www.laptop-repair.info/toshib..._password.html
I'll be back to check in.

Re: Oh no! Please help! Bios prob

Thanks :) it's a satellite m100 - so bought in 2005, but m100 is listed below and it sounds like pulling it to bits will be involved. My dad will hopefully be able do this. I will also call toshiba and ask them if they'll fix it - they said they weren't able to order any parts of the weird battery prob I've been having as the machine was bought in Malaysia (we're in Australia).

Re: Oh no! Please help! Bios prob

Yea. Worst case scenario you can just pull the BIOS battery and flash the BIOS reseting the password.

asking for a password apparently indicates a problem with the hard drive
