Video cards and VISTA
I am in the market for a laptop. I know that VISTA runs better with a dedicated video card on desktop PCs. What do I look for with a laptop? I see a lot of graphics accelerators and shared video memory. Are these adequate - is there such a thing as a dediceted video card for laptops or would it be an integrated chip?
The pc would not be used for intense gaming or video editing, I am just looking for something to run VISTA (probably business) properly with 2 or 3 GB of ram. |

Re: Video cards and VISTA
pretty much any laptop with a HD over 80GB and RAM of greater than 1GB will run Vista perfectly fine. In laptops there isn't really such a thing as a graphics card, as you say, it is a chip. Imagine the size of a laptop if it was a card!! Anyway, with plenty of RAM, say 3 or 4GB, having shared memory would be fine and a graphics accelerator works when it is needed, i.e in high demand situations

Re: Video cards and VISTA
Don't get a laptop with shared video memory if you want to run the VISTA AERO interface (3D desktop) cause you will need a 3d dedicated card.
Nvidia do 3D graphics called the Geforce Go series. Can't remember what the ATI series is called but I think its Raedon Mobility. These are built into the laptop and will be listed in system specs when buying. Last edited by lazareth1; 06-18-2008 at 03:24 AM. |

Re: Video cards and VISTA
The most common nvidia chip is the 7150. Thats what my dv9000 has.
