video problem

The same thing has been happening to me. It's happened quite a few times actually. The first time it happened it didn't return for a while so I assumed it was just a glitch, but now it's happening.
I do watch a lot of movies that I've downloaded or ones that are streaming off the internet.
I read what was posted about removing the video display drivers and all that, but honestly, I have no idea what that means/how to do it.
So any advice/explanations would be wonderful.

So I don't even know how to edit my post. Clearly I'm a newb.

So I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and lately when I tend to watch movies the screen will freeze up and then have light blue and white vertcal stripes across it. Sometimes it wil be different coloured stripes, like thin green and red ones.
Any ideas of what is causing this/how I can fix it?

check the ventilation holes are clear of dust
can you connect a monitor to see if the problem is replicated
