Acer Aspire 5100 Laptop does not detect dvd RW multirecorder anymore

Hello there,
I have an Acer Aspire 5100-3372 that came with Windows Vista. I immediately switched to Windows XP and was initially able to use/detect the DVD RW multirecorder that the laptop came with. I installed several games that require the DVD drive and was able to play them. Then after some time (few months) sometimes when I booted the machine it wouldn't detect the drive anymore. I would go to My Computer and it wouldn't appear. Sometimes repeatedly refreshing the area that shows your hard drives and devices would make it appear. Eventually the drive just stopped detecting at all. It's still connected because I can press the eject button and it has power to open and lights up, but it won't open CDs or DVDs and I can't see the device on the Device Manager or on the My Computer screen anymore.

Any help you can provide will me greatly appreciated.

try deleting the upper/lower filters or you can use CDGONE (check in Google for download site).
