Monitor does not repond when booting

I have an HP Pavillion DV6000 laptop. Last night all was good but when I turned on my computer this morning I hear an audible alarm of one long beep and two short beeps with no monitor turning on. I can hear the copmuter booting up normally in the back ground and hear the windows login screen come up but can't see anything. All the lights on my screen are coming up just fine and the sound is great, I have tried plugging in an external monitor but got nothing from that either.

Nothing has changed at all from the time that i hsut down to now that I know of. The computer doesn't look like anyone spilled anything on it while I was not looking and the only thing I have noticed lately is that it is running hot.

I have reseated the memory cards, the harddrive, and the CMOS battery with no different results. I have tried searching the audible alarms but came up with nothing. Does anyone out there know what the alarms mean and how I can repair what ever this is.

My system is dual booting, Vista and XP machine. It is originally Vista and installed XP on the back half of the harddrive as I like XP better. The machine has 2GB of Ram and 3.4 duo 2 core processor. The spash screen that lets me choose which operating system to boot will stay up for about 25 seconds on bootup and then revert to Vista if I make no choice. I can tell that is working and about 30 seconds after I hear the alarm and see the lights I hear the vista boot up sounds. but still no monitor.

Thanks for the help in the advance.

Re: Monitor does not repond when booting

hi James,

looks like Video card (one long and 2 short beeps). try using an external monitor and see if you can get a screen. also it would help if you can use a known working RAM module (just to be sure the RAM is eliminated from possible causes just in case).

as for the noticeable temp rise, clean the vents and heatsink, it always helps if these are clean and clear of any obstruction.

Re: Monitor does not repond when booting

thanks for the reply, I have cleaned the entire case and replaced both RAM modules to be sure. The beeps I had no idea about, thanks for the update. video card makes sense, though I can't figure out why it would have gone bad on me. I tried with an external monitor and no result, but if the video card is bad then the external will not work either as it's on the same card, so that pretty much narrows it down, I'm gonna send it in to HP and have a new video card put in it. Thanks for the help with it.
