[SOLVED] memory card-caused meltdown

I have a Compaq Presario r3000 laptop, from about 2004. I took the SDHC card from my camera and inserted it into the reader on the side, now that I think about it does it matter if it is sdhc or just SD with respect to the reader's compatability? The computer froze immediately, so I removed the card and the computer simply turned off cold i.e. no shutdown procedure initiated. When I try to reboot, it goes to the safemode/last known good config. screen. No matter what option I choose, it goes to the xp loading screen/safemode start, then a blue screen flickers into and out of existence very quickly. So quick I can't read anything on it. The harddrive turns off, and it's back to the safemode list.

I need some help to fix this. I tried dissabling everything but the HD on boot, but to no avail. I have a feeling it is hardware-related, I seem to remember reading about something similar to this problem with a usb port, maybe? Can I open my laptop and attack the card-reader, dissabling it, and solve the problem? Thank you very much in advance, and if this doesn't work out, I just get an excuse to build my new desktop

I disabled the system restart upon error option, this allowed me to see the blue screen that was flickering. It's a stop error screen, giving 0x0000007b(0xF7c88524, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) as the stop error. After reading through microsoft's support page, with respect to 0x0000007b stop errors, I still have no idea why the computer will not boot.

After some more research, it appears using an SDHC card with a non-compatible reader will freeze a computer real nice-like. But why wont the darn thing boot back up? If any drivers became corrupted, will I be able to use my xp install cd to repair them?

did you try safe mode

I've tried every mode available. I also tried dissabling the drive via bios, but it is not listed. For some reason my Bios seems very restricted, there are very few options to change, maybe a safeguard by HP to stop innexperienced persons? I just tried booting the driver recovery cd, but it still goes to the stop error screen, having started the cd spinning, but not initializing it.

I have the option of bringing up a screen that has the header of "Phoenix BIOS Setup Utility" with "Main, Security, Advanced, Tools, and Exit" as the subscreens. It also says my BIOS Version is F.43 with KBC version 32.43, if that means anything...

The hard drive is only mentioned in the boot order, and the HDD self-test. I ran the quick and in-depth tests, both of which were passed.

on the main don't you see the drives listed

Nope, at least nothing you can access. On the Main screen you have the option of changing the date and time and that is it.

Finally figured out what was wrong, I looked up my stop error and found that it references a corrupted boot image/sector/something. I tried repairing with the OS, but it's an SP1 whereas I run SP2, so it only messed it up more and I didn't want to slipstream SP2. I got an external hard drive kit (2.5" for the laptop HDD) and it shows all my files still intact, so we're gold. Thanks for all the help.
