Hi, I just purchase a used laptop on ebay Compaq presario model 80xl550, is a pentium 3, 20gb hard drive 256mb and no operative system on it,,,the only accesory I received was the ac adapter, this thin laptop use a external cd/dvd drive or floppy, but I dont have any of those...the cd connector is a propietary conector, because I own a external usb drive tried to connect in order to install a o.s with no luck..any idea how to do the o.s install without having the original cd rom ?? thanks in advance

hi,

older laptops with old BIOS may not support booting from USB connected optical drives. so if you need to install an operating system like XP, you will need to follow these steps:

Finally I did it.instal the xp on the laptop.thanks a lot, now a have some extra problems, sometimes the laptop does not turn on, just sit there with the green power light on, nothing else happens, after few tries the laptop boot perfect to xp, and also I noticed the time, lower right corner, does not change, maybe a problem with the internal battery ?? any comments will be gladly appreciated..regards

if you mean the time in the taskbar.. i do not think it is the internal battery issue. try to set it again, i assume it could be a Windows issue.

about the boot issue, did this happen before you installed XP? you can try to remove the hard drive and see if you get to a boot/POST every time. if it is highly intermittent, check the power ON switch or the power board if there is one.
