compaq presario m2000 does'nt boot when combo drive connected

my laptop compaq presario m2000 came with this dvd combo drive preinstalled. but from some time . i have disconnected the drive from laptop because it does'nt boot's (stops at compaq logo screen and freezes when the drive is connected to the laptop otherwise, with drive disconnected. it works fine(boot's as usual) .some one told me, that the problem is with drive. so i bought a new sony dw-q58a dvd writer .but when i connected this drive to laptop the same problem still exist's

what can be the problem guys & how can it be resolved?

hi,

if the Sony is a brand new drive, then may be there is no need to test it on another computer (a similar laptop or via USB external enclosure). so assuming this is working drive, it could mean you have some issues with your motherboard.

when you say it does not boot when the CD/DVD drive is connected, do you mean it does not boot from the CD drive or it does not boot even from the hard drive?

and it is a sony dw-q58a dvd-rw(i bought this brand new drive to replace original drive ts-l42 which was also making the laptop to stop at compaq bios boot screen logo ) some body said me the drive is faulty and to replace that drive. so ,i replaced it. still the problem is persisting but, when i remove the drive from laptop. laptop works fine .

remove the hard drive. leave the CD/DVD drive attached, boot and see if it stops at logo splash screen.

reset the CMOS. procedure can be found in this service manual:

hi,
i just checked laptop after removing the hard disk .
the cd drive is working well with as i checked it by bootig from bootable winxp cd rom it started and displayed
"setup is inspecting files....."

the hard disk jumper was set on cable select.

hard drive jumpers checked with all possible configuration's slave,master,cable select .

just for clarification, what do you mean with 'hard drive jumper was set on cable select' and with 'hard drive jumpers checked with all possible configuration's slave,master,cable select'? i am not sure how you do this so if you can describe how this is done, the better for me to understand.

i did cmos reset as it was in manual but it did'nt worked for me.
than

i took out hard drive to check if my laptop still freezes with dvd drive connected. i noticed that now laptop is not freezing on bios compaq logo screen with the dvd drive connected. and when i connected hdd. i saw that it again stopped at compaq logo screen. so, i tried changing the hard drive's jumper mode from "cable select mode" to "master mode" and than "slave mode" one by one to see if
my laptop boot's with both hdd and dvd drive connected together to laptop. and nothing worked for me .

where is this jumper mode located? can you attach an image of this? is this in the BIOS?

as i said, i checked service manual but i did not see anything about this jumper mode setting. i may have missed it so i need to know where you made this setting.

no it's not bios setting . jumper's are at the back of hard disk

example of desktop hdd

but in laptop hard disk there were only 4 pins ,and i saw these settings on my seagate hard disk label

oh ok... have you tried removing the jumper? i believe this is not needed in laptops as there are no instructions in the service guide saying about this.

hmmm i am just curious.. who put the jumper in the hard drive? is there a jumper set in the CD/DVD drive too? i am sorry but i find this quite strange that the drive is set with a jumper in a laptop. did this hard drive come with the laptop when you got it? did you get it brand new from a store?

this drive came with laptop it's a seagate with cable select preset as i saw today
and dvd drive doesnt have any jumper think its in firmware
