need help with a dell inspiron 8000

I'm pretty sure the hard drive is fried but need advice... It will turn on but after the dell screen all i get is an I/O error invalid disk replace and press any key. I tried taking the hard drive out of my toshiba that I know is good and installing it in the dell maybe i'm doing something worng cause even with the toshiba's hard drive i still get the same msg. I am able to enter the boot menu and have tried both booting from the internal drive and from a vista cd i have but either way still get the same error with both hard drives. Any advice would help
thanks

hi,

please include in your post the order of boot devices in bios. the CD/DVD driver should come first... at least before the HDD.

I've tried it with the cd drive first and then again with the hard drive first

when you tried with CD drive first, what CD did you use to boot from?

btw do you have a CD/DVD drive or just a CD drive.

Re: need help with a dell inspiron 8000

so with a Vista DVD in the CD/DVD drive and boot sequence set to boot from CD/DVD drive, still gives you the message 'invalid disk..'?

i understand you tried this also with the HDD removed?

try the same boot settings with a different boot CD. If you have a bootable CD like the one for Memtest86+ or any linux live CD (i.e. PCLinuxOS, Knoppix or Ubuntu... try Knoppix). again boot from the CD/DVD drive with the HDD removed. ensure boot sequence/order in BIOS is set to boot from CD/DVD drive first.

post back any results...
