Compaq Presario 1700t has power, no start up

Hi everyone. I just received a Compaq Presario 1700t with an 800 mhz 256 processor with ME installed. Everything seemed to work ok except the ethernet port. I pulled the LCD, keyboard, and top cover off to get the numbers off of the modem/NIC combo card. When I got everything back together, it would not power up. The power light comes on and the hard drive spins up, but nothing else. No beeps and nothing on the LCD at all. I pulled it back apart and found the #1 pin on the backlight plug bent over to the metal casing around the plug. I got it straightened out and did not see any other physical damage. I got everything back together again and still nothing. I then pulled the CMOS battery and tried again. Still nothing. What else could be wrong? Please help. Thanks

mikeescott,

Did you do anything with the NIC? Something must have been altered or changed when you opened up the unit if it was working prior to that. Were there any ribbon cables or connectors that you had to disconnect when taking the PC apart?

If the built-in LCD was not properly reconnected or somehow damaged when you took the PC apart, you should still be able to connect an external VGA monitor to the port on the laptop, press the function key to toggle between built-in and external video and get something on that external display. It's worth trying. If you can access the system THIS way, then the problem is with the connection to or state of the internal LCD display.

I puled the NIC and got numbers off both sides and gave it a good looking over for damage. I unplugged cables for the LCD, keyboard, touchpad, and CPU fan. I will check with external monitor when I get home tonight.

Re: Compaq Presario 1700t has power, no start up

Might be an idea to download the service manual, they do come in handy, tell you what order to take them apart and how to do it. Though I haven't looked at a Compaq manual, have used my Dell and my granddaughter's HP manuals, makes things a lot easier. Here's a link to the 1700 series manual at a blog, don't know if Compaq would still offer one at their site given the age of the machine. It's in .rar format, so needs to be unzipped. That's the WinRar file extension, but other unzip utilites will probably work, I just use winrar when I get that type of file.

Could also be that something wasn't reconnected when you reassembled it.
