Video problems with Asus G2S-A1
I hope I can find the right answers by posting here, because this may also be a video card issue, or a drivers issue. :)
I purchased the Asus G2S-A1 about 8 months ago, and I have been having problems since I got it. I've looked around often, and I cannot find anyone else having the same problems with this laptop. My biggest concern is that this is a gaming laptop, but I cannot play games on it. All of my 3d games and applications are extremely laggy! At first it was okay, but it slowly got worse and worse. I also work with 3d programs, and now it's effecting my work. :( Basically, whenever I run a 3d game or such, I am getting around 1 frame a second. My old crappy desktop ran better than this, and it only had 512 ram, and a very old video card. I simply don't know what to do with this laptop now, and I'm asking for any help I can get. Another issue that happens, that my be relevant: When I first got the laptop, the video card drivers kept crashing which would crash all of my 3d applications. It did this about once an hour. Now it does it about once every few days, but has not gone away completely. Also: I cannot seem to update the drivers to my video card. I download what I am sure is the right driver from the Nvidia site, but the thing wont run. It says that I do not have 'that' video card on my computer. My level of knowledge on hardware and software for the computer is somewhat low. Here are the stats of this laptop: * 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor T7500 * Windows Vista Home Premium * Intel 965 PM Express chipset * 2GB SDRAM DDR2 667MHz (2 X 1GB) with up to 4GB supported * 17.1 WUXGA (1920x1200) glossy display * nVidia GeForce 8600M GT w/256MB VRAM support * 160GB (5400rpm) S-ATA HDD Any help, advice, recommendations, or anything else would be appreciated! :) |

Re: Video problems with Asus G2S-A1
hi WashuZ,
have you tried the video drivers from Asus website? http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us or try this... http://asusnotebookdriver.com/asus-g2s.htm install the chipset driver first before installing the video driver.

Re: Video problems with Asus G2S-A1
Thanks! I've been giving that a go today.
The games are a little better. I'm still getting some slow downs that show up and then vanish after a minute or two. But so far, better! |

Re: Video problems with Asus G2S-A1
well since you are running some tests anyway... run some diags on your harddrive and your RAM too. run Memtest for RAM (see link below). for the HDD, d/load the utility from the link HDD Diagnostic tools on my sig. get the utility specific for your brand. both utilities need their image be burned into a blank CD. boot from the CD drive using these CDs to start the tests.

Re: Video problems with Asus G2S-A1
Thank you very much for the help.
Unfortunately, this did not seem to fix my problem. I thought it did at first, but it was back to doing the same things after a day. After doing those tests that were suggested, everything came back fine. Now the graphics driver is crashing more often again. A few times a day. Is there any other tests I can run to figure out what the problem might be? |

Re: Video problems with Asus G2S-A1
the tests will tell you if your RAM or hard drive is malfunctioning. if they both pass with flying colors, then it could be Windows or your video card.
you can also try reinstalling Vista or use a restore point.
