EEK! Inspiron 6000 gets scorching hot/ battery not part of recall. What can I do?

My I 6000 was purchased in 2005 and the warranty is no longer in effect.
It gets hot after running about 5 minutes and there are lines on the screen
(It has not been dropped or had any kind of temperature or liquid damage)
My battery was not in the recall, but I paid a lot for this laptop and I need it for my writing work. Is there anything I can do about this without buying a new system or paying an outrageous service call? Help!

hi BrynnaC,

it looks like overheating. does this happen every after 5mins. after power ON (consistently)? do you see any other error? use SpeedFan or NHC to monitor your temps.

what you can do right now is make sure the vents are clear of any obstruction. take can of compressed air and shoot some thru the vents. make sure the vents and the heatsink is free of dust or any foreign matter. if you can open it up the better so you can clean up the insides and reapply thermal compound.

as for the lines on the screen, does it happen when system heats up? if so, it could be your video card. how does the lines look like (color, width, length, etc.)?

Re: Inspiron 6000 gets scorching hot/ battery not part of recall. What can I do?

I've tried that too. As for the lines, two yellow ones an inch from r of screen, Started with one, then another one showed up. No one uses this computer but me. It is strictly for working on my novels. I always use it in a well ventilated enviroment. It does this on cord or battery and every single time I turn it on. Often shuts itself down after about five minutes and won't turn on for a while after that. ?????????
PS Thanks Also the lines look like you took a yellow pen and drew two from top to bottom of screen.

Re: Inspiron 6000 gets scorching hot/ battery not part of recall. What can I do?

hi,

yellow lines can be a sign of a defective video card. have you tried to lower your resolution (i doubt if this would help because as you said they show up even on startup, which i understand as during the POST. but just try it just for testing). if they still come out, try using an external monitor and observe if problem remains.

five minutes of use before shut down could surely mean overheating. have you used SpeedFan or NHC to monitor your temps? if so, how high are they? please provide these information as they could help narrow down possibilities.

since you are at it and since we are doing the tests, run Memtest86+ to test your RAM modules. if you have two RAM sticks installed run the test using one RAM stick at a time (remove the other stick). also, check your hard drive. use CHKDSK /R on the Recovery Console using XP install CD.

post back any information you can provide.

Not really sure what a ram stick is. I have not used Speed fan or Nhc (never heard of it and I couldn't find anything that would test the temp on my pc.) The lines remain regardless.

have you done any repair to your laptop before? I mean opening it up and replacing parts inside? if not, i suggest you bring this to a repair shop. what you see on your screen could be video card related and could need video card or motherboard replacement to resolve.
