HP factory defect?
I have a HP Pavilion dv8305us that I bought new a couple years ago. it started acting up last month and I noticed that there is piece of sturdy vinyl over the fan port... I can't believe I didn't notice it there before, but I know it doesn't belong there... after thinking it out I believe that it's a piece of material that was supposed to be removed when the fan was installed. I have never seen a laptop that you couldn't see the fan directly through the hole provided for it. I have talked to HP support a couple times, and their answer is, Send it in along with $300 bucks and we'll look at it. Does anyone have any inside on who I could talk to to get it fixed, since I think it burned up as part of their negligence in not removing the plastic piece at time of manufacture? (yeah, I know I should have noticed it way before now...)
thanks in advance! doug P.S. if you have one of these laptops, I'd be interested in finding out if you can see the fan when you look in the vent, or if all of them have plastic or vinyl over them... thanks! |

Re: HP factory defect?
hi Doug,
that is correct. fans and vents should NOT be covered by anything. what you need is the service guide to help you disassemble the system. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00701888.pdf the manual will guide you how to do removals and replacements of all devices, including CPU, fan and heatsink. before you open it up, have a can of air ready to clean the insides. also have thermal compound ready should you need to remove the fan and heatsink. put a small amount thermal compound on the CPU and on heatsink before putting them back together. just post back what happens.

Re: HP factory defect?
it'll ba a day or two before I can try it, I can do anything with a desktop, this will be my first time inside a laptop though... after I get it open and make sure there aren't any popped caps or anything obviously burned up, I'll install a new processor before I close it back up... thanks a bunch!
