LCD Screen Problem

Packard Bell Easynote F5280 D HR Intel 2.8ghz Laptop

Hi, just noted a small problem that has appeared while my wife is playing her games on line or browsing the net. The screen will suddenly have lines down the screen and its garbled. this has only happened a couple of times. If she was to restart the laptop it would be fine dont do it all the time. whilst the lines are there and garbled she can do nothing only shut down and restart. any help please as I have it listed on ebay with the fault mentioned

I have also taken a picture of the problem and also tried connecting to an external LCD Screen and when it happens the external screen goes black.

I also remember that the wife did a bios update the other day and it was working fire up until then could this be the case and should I try restoring the bios

Cheers Daniel

Re: LCD Screen Problem

hi Daniel,

any info on your video card? is it integrated? symptom show video card cannot handle resolution. could mean a defective video card. the downside of laptops is that unless you are on laptops built for gaming or entertainment, the video chip/card most often cannot handle such loads.

does the problem occur only when gaming or does it happen even on ordinary use (browsing the internet, Word, etc. but no games)? does it happen when watching CD/DVD movies?

check if your system is overheating. monitor your temps (use Speedfan or NHC) while playing games and see if the temp rises to high levels (more than 60 deg. C).

Re: LCD Screen Problem

Hi, no this has only happened since the bios was updated, and the wife only plays card games and various other low spec games and the game this photo relates to is Clayside.

Temperture I will monitor again today when the wife plays her game but I have left the laptop on all day today playing a DVD, No Errors, No restarts and No wierd pictures.

Resolution is set at 1024 x 768 - 32bit
Graphics:- SISM661FX - 64mb
refresh Rate:- 75hertz

Re: LCD Screen Problem

hi Daniel,

have you checked if there are new driver versions for chipset and video? updating the bios 'should' not have that effect unless the bios is beta and not a stable release (which i really doubt).

in some laptops you can downgrade the bios to a previous version. i do not know if that is applicable to your model.

post back what you find out.

Re: LCD Screen Problem

the drivers can be uninstalled and replaced by an older one but for the BIOS... that i am not sure.

try this for video driver: http://www.nodevice.com/driver/SiSM661FX/get29998.html

or directly from SiS website:
http://driver.sis.com/graphic/igp/uniVGA3/uvga3_384.zip

or download the one from Packard Bell website...

Re: LCD Screen Problem

hi Daniel,

how's the temps? is it within acceptable range?

did it suffer from BSOD before shutting down? if ever were there any error messages, or signs before the shut OFF?

if the temps are GOOD and out of the question... run diags on your RAM and HDD. use Memtest86+ (link on my sig). as for the HDD diagnostic, visit the page whose link on my sig (HDD Diagnostic Tool) and d/load the utility for your brand of HDD.

post back what happens.

Re: LCD Screen Problem

hi Daniel,

have you tried the hard drive diagnostic? your RAM looks healthy but i notice you did only one pass. i forgot to tell you to run atleast 2 passes (around 2 hours of tests). but nevermind that now... i suggest to go ahead and test your hard drive.

Re: LCD Screen Problem

hi Daniel,

i forgot to add... video card errors may include these symptoms especially when laptop is moved (even with slightest movement). i am curious if this is applicable to your situation.

Hi & Good Morning

As far as im aware I dont think the laptop moves. it is sat on dining room table then on top of a laptop cooler.

tried the Hitatchi Hard Drive test software again last night still coudnt get it to work must be there software.

Is there anyway in testing the Graphics Card/Chip?

As for testng the Hard Drive I will have to find other software.

Is there anyway in testing the Graphics Card/Chip? -- i was just planning to try this but was not given the chance to do so. http://freestone-group.com/download/...yTestSetup.exe
