Pin [SOLVED] Intermittent BSoD

I am having an issue with my Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with XP SP2. I get the BSoD that can occur randomly and most often when playing a video such as from YouTube. The BSoD error can vary but most commonly involve an IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL and memory dump message. How do I diagnose the problem and correct the issue? Thanks, Shawn

I ran chkdsk /r yesterday without any notable results. I cannot get memtest to boot even after choosing cdrom as the primary boot drive.

Re: Intermittent BSoD

about the Memtest86+ it could have been that you copied it directly to CD. What CD burning tool did you use? Try ImgBurn (d/load link on my sig below). after installing ImgBurn, just double click on the Memtest.ISO file and ImgBurn will open and you can burn the image of Memtest from there.

Memtest was showing 0% pass / 2 errors and nothing but red. What other results do you need?

Re: Intermittent BSoD

Let Memtest run for 2 passes for each stick of RAM. if you have two RAM sticks installed, run with only one stick during the tests (remove the other one).

see if you have errors in each of the RAM stick. if there are errors in any of the RAM sticks, it is a sign to replace them with a new one or with a known working spare.

One RAM stick was clean. The other would lock up during testing.

Re: Intermittent BSoD

remove the 'bad' one and use only the 'good' one. boot and run XP normally and see if you get BSOD as often as you did before. best if you can also replace the 'bad' one with a known working one.

Thanks TriggerFinger!!

No BSoD with "bad" stick removed. I even ran several videos at once trying to trip the memory dump. I ordered a new 1gb stick as a replacement. (System takes two 1gb sticks max which I had).

I'll wait a day or two to confirm smooth operation before I mark as solved.
