Arrow Administrators Rights Denied

Hello All!

I have just registered on this website, but have lurked Tech Support Forums and have found a fix by using the "search" function. This time I'm totally in the dark.

I have a problem that IBM or AT&T DSL cannot help me with. On my IBM R51e Laptop I have been getting denied administrator's rights. I bought this laptop on Ebay a couple of years ago and it was still under warranty. Running some of my programs, ie 'photography'. I am denied access.

I have sent this PC to IBM about 3 times. It has been unsuccessful in getting this problems resolve, I have ran countless system restores on it to no avail. IBM said that this laptop was originally issued to a corporation and that I should contact who I had purchased it from.

Then I tried to get help with my AT&T DSL because I'm once again denied the privilege to download browser, anti-virus, etc. Now AT&T throws me back to IBM. I purchased an extended warranty with IBM, a glitch on their end, it's good until the year 2013. (I know I'll be dead or this laptop will be.)

I have a desktop PC as well and made sure that the Computer Management on the Administrators Tools of Local Users and Groups are set correctly. I'm running Windows XP Pro that was pre-installed in the IBM Laptop R51e.

I have gone to START > RUN and typed in "cmp" then ENTER typed in the "net user" on the Command Prompt to see if I could locate something in my HKEYS. No luck!

I'm like a cat chasing its tail. As I have stated, I have lurked this forum for many years due to other problems, and had them resolved with a click here and there.

I'm in hopes that someone may have the fix for me.

Regards,
Kat

P.S. I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong sub-forum. If so please redirect my post to the correct sub-forum.

hi katnip,

it seems to me you have tried a fresh install of XP already, correct? did that help? what service pack of XP are you using? obviously giving of permissions is an administrators task and you should have administrator rights to be able to do this.

Hi TriggerFinger,

Love your ID! When I do a total restore I always set it back to the manufacturer's default. My Windows XP Pro is installed on my IBM Laptop. Therefore I do not have a physical disk.

As I have stated, I cannot get this problem resolved. I know there are some extremely gifted people on this site, as I have had issues before and got them fix by searching the forums.

However, I'm hitting a wall on this one. I truly appreciate your time and interest in trying to help me as well.

Sincerely,
Kat~

Re: Administrators Rights Denied

hi katnip,

sorry for not understanding it correctly, when you say total restore do you do it from a restore or recovery partition of your R51?

Re: Administrators Rights Denied

At the home/user selection screen, press ctrl+alt+del, now type in administrator for the user and leave the password blank. Login that way and try to do whatever it is you are trying to do with the software and update your A/V software.

If you are still stumped I would look into a company called fastlaptoprepair. I sent a laptop of mine to them and they fixed it pretty quickly.

Hi TriggerFinger,

When I do a restore or recovery I use the 6 disks that IBM issued to the IBM ThinkPad R51e.

I am in hopes that I missed a click here or there.

Thank you for your help and kindness with trying to get this issue resolved. Any other help you can offer is appreciated.

Sincerely,
Kat

This laptop is under warranty with IBM and is NOT a stolen laptop. (this issue was brought to my attention in a PM). I have done numerous restores and recoveries, but to date I have not been successful. There are no password protection that I have put on the OS.

I have just installed my personal copy of 2008 Norton's Anti-Virus. I had to purchase this program because I'm denied to download any of AT&T DSL software.

The one question that is asked, "Are you able to connect to the internet?" I reply, "Yes". Then they seem to think that my problem is not important.

That is yet another one of my problems, IBM throws me to AT&t DSL and then AT&T DSL throws it back to IBM.

Any other help will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Kat

Re: Administrators Rights Denied

hi katnip,

about the AT&T software packages that you cannot download... these come free if you get AT&T internet service, am i correct? to download you need to get to the website probably AT&T website or their affiliate website. this website will require you with an account name or account number or a promo code which AT&T gives its internet service customers. am i on the right track so far?

now for the error that you get. when exactly do you get this? is it during the time you attempt to download and a message from the website tells you that you are not authorized? or you were asked for an account name or number and a password and when you entered them, it says you are not authorized? if that is so, then it is not an R51 hardware or a Windows XP issue. Reason why IBM is telling you to go and ask assistance from AT&T.

when you get 'access denied' in Windows then you should log in as ADMINISTRATOR. if that does not solve your problem, it could be a virus infection. my worst case scenario at this point is to wipe the hard drive clean and install XP fresh.
