HP pavilion zv5000 random freezing
Hello, I recently obtained this laptop from a friend so I don't know much about it. After two times starting it cold, it works the first 10-20 minutes but then starts freezing and I have to hard boot it.
I thought it was a problem with windows, and I planned on reinstalling windows anyway, so I attempted to reinstall but I got a BSOD during the first run of the install. Then I installed ubuntu 8.04 with wubi, and tried running that but it froze numerous times and I could barely get to the desktop. Then I ran memtest for 4 passes, and no errors were found so I would think its not the ram. What doesn't make sense is that as I'm writing this, the laptop is running ubuntu just fine, just like I said about it running when its cold. I may be wrong about that but so far so good. I have done a fair amount of googling on this, but most people don't know what they are talking about and are calling it a virus or a problem with windows, when as far as I can tell, it is not. Either way I'm at an end here, and I need some help. So, any help would be appreciated. -Tom |

Re: HP pavilion zv5000 random freezing
A couple minutes before it freezes I get artifacts on the screen similar to that of when you overclock you GPU too much. they dance around.. Could the GPU be overheating?
It doesn't FEEL hot, but could the heatsink be dislodged? |

Re: HP pavilion zv5000 random freezing
I have one of these laptops at work. They do tend to run warm to hot.
Downlaod the below program and check your temps. http://www.pbus-167.com/

Re: HP pavilion zv5000 random freezing
I have found that it seems a little more stable when its cold, but when it warms up.. not so much.
I took it apart and reseated the cpu heatsink and applied fresh paste. There was WAY to much on the from the factory. And now the lappy is MUCH more stable. Even when running cpuburn for 10 or so minutes. But it still freezes here and there, but I think that might be due to the faulty battery along with the damaged power plug. The plug unplugs and the batt is dead but isntead of shutting down it freezes.. Odd. I'm not sure if I fixed it or not.. But its running better. Any other ideas guys? |
