Dell Latitude D600, internet connectivity problems.

As the title states, having issues getting on the internet, recently had a bad hard drive, installed new one (WD Scorpio 160gb EIDE) and reinstalled windows XP. Now when I first start up, I can get online for a moment, it directs me to dbsarticles as my home page, and I've read some not so cool things about that. I can't afford to pay someone to fix this so any direction would be so helpful...

hi papagimp,

is the problem mainly on the home page? have you tried changing it? if so, does it go back to the same dbsarticles website?

EDIT:
if it keeps changing back to dbsarcticles as homepage, it might be a browser hijack. try the steps here:
http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

if that does not help, we can request assistance from the Security Center forum team.

Re: Dell Latitude D600, internet connectivity problems.

It definatly sounds like a browser hijack from what I've read on here today. i also received a ms32.sys error shortly after installing xp and prior to installing any windows updates. The malicous software remover from service pack 2 removes that file but not the problem....and the problem starts in sync with that error message. The dbsarticles "homepage" kicks in after every reboot. along with a loss of internet, still logged on, and I can still download, such as the auto updates, or play final fantasy xi online that sort of thing, just no web page viewing ability. I'll start reading that link. Thanks for the quick replay.

(edit* I'd like to add, I've not owned nor played on a computer in about 9 or 10 years now...so consider me a noob but a somewhat educated noob, baby terms work the best :D )

Re: Dell Latitude D600, internet connectivity problems.

Update: while waiting for a response and whatnot, I went ahead and wiped the drive, started over. managed to install some drivers, ones that I had installed after the problem had already occured, so still need to find others that I'm not scared to install. Got XP up to speed with all updates (minus the service pack 3), ran to store and bought Norton 360. I did run the Active Scan 2.0 from Panda as suggested by the hijackthis thread, it removed a "worm" from somewhere, I have that file saved. So, I'd like to know what else I should do to check my current system as well as preventative steps I can take in the future to avoid something like this from happening again? Recommendations are always appreciated.
