unmountable boot vol error

I got this blue screen and boot error on my laptop. Tried loading recovery from a XP Pro CD but the computer shuts down before I get to the 'Welcome' screen everytime. Not sure why this is happening. Any advice?

if you cannot get into BIOS settings because it shuts down upon start up, reseat or replace your RAM module/s with a known working one.

Re: unmountable boot vol error

i can get into the BIOS settings, that's not where it shuts down. It shuts down before it gets to the 'welcome to setup' screen from the XP CD, at the bottom of the screen where it says reading or loading a bunch of setup files.

if you can enter BIOS settings, follow what dai has advised to check if the hard drive is listed.
