advent 6522 annoying problem

Hii was recently given a advent 6522 laptop. Successfully wiped of /reformated harddrive of mellinium.

Put xp home on, all new drivers etc, replaced cmos battery (without taking cpu out)
It worked fine for a day then would not start.

I presumed it was the battery and life hours, so i purchased a new battery, left it charging and its still the same.

I press it on, the green lights come on , the fan wizzes around for 2 secs and then stops, took it apart to have a look and i can feel power going to the harddrive, but thats where my knowledge stops!

It came with a dud harddrive that had recently been replaced, is there a known error with these?

40gig HD
128 ram (think) (will be upping that!)

Thanks for any advice.

hi tankie,

you mean it shuts off seconds after powering it ON? if it does not shut OFF, and you do not see anything on the screen, try using an external monitor.

Re: advent 6522 annoying problem

try reseating the RAM or use a known good RAM stick (temporarily). if it shuts off still, power ON without the battery (just AC adapter). try to power ON also using battery alone (AC unplugged).

if problem persists, strip it down to just RAM (known good RAM stick), keyboard, LCD. remove the harddrive, cddrive, etc., then power ON. try to access BIOS settings. if you get to BIOS without the system shutting OFF, plug in the other devices (HDD, CDdrive, etc.) one at a time, powering ON each time.

Re: advent 6522 annoying problem

Hi back again, tried all removed all still no joy.

One thing i have noticed is that the psu fan spins sometimes more than others say after pressing on 5 times on the 5th it spins more.

Still nothing on screen. i cannot seem to get at the DVD rom or floppy and can find where the powers for these are?

cheers jay

Re: advent 6522 annoying problem

you mean it still shuts OFF? it will do that if you have removed the RAM. it will also do that if you have dead RAM. replacing it with a new or a known working one will help isolate the problem.

how many ram slots does your model have? did you remove all the old RAM modules and replaced them with new modules? i am saying this because other laptops have RAM slots that is hardly accessible (under the keyboard). http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/6522.htm

Re: advent 6522 annoying problem

just to clarify, using the new RAM in either of the slots makes no difference. i mean each time you power ON, the laptop shuts OFF (all LEDs OFF) after 2 to 3 seconds. is this correct? is the replacement RAM brand new or at least tested to work? be sure this is a good RAM.

btw do you hear any beeps during these first 2 to 3 seconds?

also have you tried stripping it down to just RAM, keyboard, LCD and motherboard (all drives removed) then powering ON?

i surely hope you would try these just to narrow down the possibilities as it looks like a defective motherboard to me.
