HP, No Lifesigns At All

Hi all

Well ive had this laptop for over a year, a couple of months back i was watching a film on my HP Pavilion DV6500, then all of a sudden it turns off, it was pluged in and the little blue light was on thats around the power supply were it goes into the laptop.

since then it hasnt shown no sign of life other than the blue light around the power supply, no charging light, no power button light.

ive done everything listed on the HP support site:

Resetting ram
With and without Battery
With and without AC Power supply
Removing external items.

i now have the entire laptop in pieces, so if anyone can think of something i should check please let me know as i do have a far knowledge of them, how ever this is a problem i cannot solve myself, and i really do not feel like taking it to the local pc store to pay them £40 just to tell me whats wrong with it and then pay for what ever part is wrong..

Ide appreciate any help.

Thanks alot
Adam.

Re: HP, No Lifesigns At All

hi Adam,

Welcome to TSF

since you got it open, have you noticed anything burnt on the motherboard?

i suggest putting it back together except for the HDD, CD drive, WiFi and modem. Yes, strip it down to just the RAM, the keyboard and LCD and try to power ON.

Re: HP, No Lifesigns At All

Hi again... that was cool almost like a real life experience

kidding aside, when you opened it up, have you checked the power button or the switch?

i will download a service manual for your model and see if there is a panel for the switches. i am thinking it might me the switch. try pressing the other buttons as well, it might give us some 'light' (literally and figuratively speaking )

EDIT:
i attached the instructions on how to remove the switch cover. it seems the switch is part of the cover too. check the cables and their respective connections.

Re: HP, No Lifesigns At All

Hi trigger,

I managed to print off a service manual the other day before i took it apart, the switch seems to be ok but i will try taking it apart to check it..

if the blue light on the wside is on, does this mean my motherboard / power supply is ok?

Cheers
Adam

Re: HP, No Lifesigns At All

AFAIK it only shows there is power going into the board but it does not prove that that power is distributed well in all the other components or devices.

i am hoping it is NOT the motherboard (reason why i am praying that somehow it is the switch or the power button or the cables that connects it to the mobo.)

EDIT (additional comments/observation):
i do not know if you can still remove the power button board and separate it from the plastic cover. i say this because if it is possible, may be you can check the switch using a multimeter (just a continuity check).

the power button that you see on the switch cover is just an interface. it still pushes a switch underneath it. the switch for sure is part of the power button board.

you tested the switch directly or via the power button?

EDIT: i was just told that shortly before this problem happend, one of my parents had tryed to charge it with a universal charger, they said it was a tight fit getting it in, but since then the charger that came with it hasnt been powering the laptop up nor charging the battery...

Re: HP, No Lifesigns At All

about the tool, yeah i think so. especially if you want to pursue a more in-depth troubleshooting.

as for the universal charger, aside from the tight fit problem, is the power output (voltage and current) checked and adjusted to match what is needed by the laptop? also check the DC jack where the output the adapter plugs in. since you mentioned about a tight fit, check if a solder of the DC jack has lifted up.
