cannot boot past windows screen
Hello......my computer is missing some file for windows. When I turn it on it goes to the windows xp screen and sits there for a minute and then the error message pops up and goes away quickly, so I dont know exactly what it says that I am missing. But, it then turns off and then turns back and tries to log in again. It goes through this over and over until I give up and turn it off. Is there anyway I can boot it into safe mode to just get my files (pictures) off of it before I run the restore on it which deletes everything????? I dont want to lose all my pictures and of course I dont have them saved anywhere else

Re: cannot boot past windows screen
hi erinleah76010,
how about trying to repair your Windows first? try the steps in this page: http://www.informationweek.com/news/...questid=197687 do post back what happens... by the way, run some tests on your RAM too. d/load Memtest86+ (link on my sig. below) and burn the image to CD. boot from that CD to run the diags. give it a good 2 to 3 runs (around 3 hours total) just to be sure it is not the RAM that malfunctions during startup.

Re: cannot boot past windows screen
If it were RAM it wouldn't even get to the POST.
If you want to reformat your hard drive and put in a clean install, if you have another computer you can slave your hard drive to that computer to extract all your pictures and other data you saved. Then take that HD out and reinstall it in your computer doing the fresh install of Windows on it.

Re: cannot boot past windows screen
i agree (in a way). craigwatanabe is right that if it is the RAM it would not POST... if it is a dead RAM to be exact but for RAM with errors it will still post only that your Windows will have problems as it loads up.
