Dell Latitude C840 Will Not Boot

When I press the power button all led lights come on except the battery light. The laptop stays on for about 5 seconds and then shuts off. There is no display during the the 5 seconds; even the fans do not run. But when I press the power button and the F12 key (with or without the battery installed) the led lights come and the fans run. There is still no display and I can't power off the laptop unless I take the battery out.

Re: Dell Latitude C840 Will Not Boot

hi lcancer,

Welcome to TSF !

so basically your problem is whether with battery or no battery, you do not get anything on screen when you power ON, am i correct? by the way, i am not familiar with the combination PowerON + F12 keys... can you give some info on this?

anyhow try this:
1. remove battery and AC adapter
2. press power ON button for 30 secs. or so (more is good)
3. release and attach battery and AC adapter
4. power ON as normal.

try these steps and observe if you get any signs of life (i.e. screen, fans running, etc.). if fans are running and LEDs come up, hook up your laptop with an external monitor.

post back what happens..

Re: Dell Latitude C840 Will Not Boot

First let me thank you for replying. There is no change in the laptop's behavior. It still won't boot up. I got the power button and F12 procedure from a thread that I read earlier this week. The only time I can get any thing to run on the laptop (fan, DVD rom) is when I press the power button and F12, but still no display or error indicators (beeps or sounds).

ok try reseating RAM and power ON again (do the normal power ON and not with the F12 combination). if this does not work, replace the RAM or test them on another computer. shut off a few seconds after power ON can sometimes be caused by a bad RAM.

Re: Dell Latitude C840 Will Not Boot

I checked the ram in another laptop and it was good. I put the ram back in my laptop and I still can't get it to boot up. Do you have any other ideas about what could be wrong with it?

Re: Dell Latitude C840 Will Not Boot

hi,

have you tried using battery or AC adapter alone? if this do not work, try to strip the machine down to the basics (remove CD drive, remove HDD, remove WiFi card if there is one but leave the RAM). power ON as normal and see if you get anything on screen while it POSTs. of course this will end in error but at least it was able to power up without doing the power ON+F12 combination.

Re: Dell Latitude C840 Will Not Boot

I removed every thing you suggested and the laptop gave me the same response with the CDROM, Hard Drive, and all cards taken out.

i believe you left the RAM in (as it should be)? given that, i am afraid it could be that your mobo has walked out on you or it could be a corrupted BIOS. remove the battery and unplug from AC then remove CMOS battery. leave it for some time (may be a 30 minutes to an hour as some CMOS do not clear out that fast - per my own experience). then do a power ON (devices attached or not, does not matter).

if that would not give you a POST or a splash screen consider replacing the motherboard or bring it to a repair shop for further diagnosis on the mobo.
