can i burn data on to blank dvd disks

i have got a sony vaio laptop PCG-7Y1M with windows vista and i want to copy data off my laptop onto blank disks but how do i do it because i have downloaded some software to copy the data onto disks but when it completes i try playing the disk but it always says bad disk, help please!!!!!!

Look for your model info & post it. May be something like "VGN-N38E".

Make sure your burner will burn DVD's & not just CD's. But that's why you need to post your model info. Also what apps are you using to try & burn your disc's ?

Ok good , thanks. One thing you need to remember re burning DVD discs that's different from burning CD discs is the disc manufacturer. DVD burners are MUCH more temperamental with discs than CD burners.

What brand of DVD discs are you using ?

they are cheap ones from a shop called wilkinsons in england

Ok. I'm pretty sure if you get some good , name brand discs you will be able to burn without a problem. Look for Verbatim discs.

edit...

Also look for Taiyo Yuden discs. Another thing to try if you still have probs is to reduce the burn speed from say 8x to 4x.
