Toshiba a15 s129 will not boot all the time

My son has a toshiba a15 s129 xp sp2 celeron 2.4 ghz 1 gig ddr ram.

Some water was spilled on the keyboard prior to this beginning.
After it was dried for four days in front of a fan it ran fine for 2-3 weeks.
There appears to be a water stain on the battery sticker.

Now it will sometimes boot with just the battery, but stays on for only a short while then it shuts off.
Sometimes just to the windows screen, then shuts off.
Sometimes not at all.
While it is running as soon as you plug in the p/s it shuts off.
(The p/s has been tested and is fine)

Once it shuts off an amber light starts to flash a code:
With the battery in - long, long, short, short, short, long, short, short.

When I remove the battery it will not boot at all with just the p/s,and I get a different set of flashes - s,s,l,s.s,l,s,s

I have tried to find out about these light codes but cannot find anything on line.
Now after several attempts on the battery nothing.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to proceed ?

Thanks,
Bob

Re: Toshiba a15 s129 will not boot all the time

hi Bob,

can you check what is the manufacturer of the BIOS for your laptop? (Award, Phoenix, etc). We need that so we can find the meaning of the beep codes. You said the power supply is OK? if so, it can be your motherboard malfunctioning as it works with battery but not with a good power supply.

Re: Toshiba a15 s129 will not boot all the time

Thanks for the reply,
I will try to get it to post, but the last two days nothing.
These light codes are on blinking as soon as the power problem arises, when the laptop is not running or posting either, so they are not really beep codes like I get during a pc post.
I have 2 p/s's both are fine.
I have volt meter and just for grins and chuckles I touched some contacts on the battery,I got some voltage jumps out of some of the pins but not all (some possibly part of the charging circuit?)

Re: Toshiba a15 s129 will not boot all the time

Well i got it running (for over an hour now)
During the post I cannot access the set up screen, so I cannot see which bios are on the laptop.
I dug into the system a bit and found this though:

Bios Version / Date - TOSHIBA Version 1.30 09/02/2003

SM Bios Version - 2.3

Hope that helps.

Also now it is only running on the power supply, even with the battery out of the unit.(I removed it and put it back in whilst it was running to see what would happen.
The battery however shows ZERO charge even after an hour of operation.

This, by the way is the longest it has operated in weeks.

Thanks
Bob
