Hi
,I just bought a used Dell laptop inspiron 4150 with XP Home and SP 2. I cleaning it all up (removing all the of someone else’s crap to make room for my own crap) and was wanting to download all my favorite computer spyware essentials and cleanup goodies when I ran into a problem and was wondering if there is a god out there with answers..??..Here is my problem, and a strange one at that. I plug in my cat5 cord, that I know is good, because my desk top works fine when using it, and all the lights light up, my nework connection says I'm connected (shows bytes sent and received) but I can't surf the net.I get page cannot be displayed. ![]() The first thing I tried was to ping www.yahoo.com and got ping request could not find host. Then I did ping 69.147.114.210 (ip address of www.yahoo.com) and actually get returns with 0 loss and an average of 28ms. not bad I guess... But still no surfing allowed..![]() While I'm poking around looking at configurations to see if something noticeable stands out, like I really know what I'm doing.... not... But I know enough to compare the seating to those on my desktop.. The Microsoft automatic windows update poops up and tells me there are updates available to download.. Hummm :sigh...Ha, that is a good sign, right..??.. That means the ethernet card works (remember I just bought this used). Anyway, I have downloaded updated drivers (transfer with CD from desktop to laptop) and haven't not had any luck.. I contacted RR support and the tier 2 person tells me I need to go in and pick up a RR installation CD because I have never loaded the RR CD on this computer. Needless to say, the tier two person said nothing after I told them I never loaded the RR CD on my desktop either, since I replaced it two years ago.... Of course, that didn't work... So, off I went to the phone and finally got to tier 3... That took awhile considering its only RR support... Ups, sorry if I offended anyone that might be a RR support person .. The tier 3 person tells me there are issues with my line from the outside in and they can't trouble shot anything across that mess.. They are sending a support person out later this week to look into the problems with the line. But again, recall that I said my desk top is working just fine and those automatic downloads are still coming in, so I'm not so sure that the problems with the line is keeping me from surfing all those new net posting just aching for me to view them..![]() I finally got up on the right side of bed this morning and decided to turn to the one place I know there are gods that can help..Any suggestions..??..

Go to Control Panel -> Network Connections, 2. RIGHT-CLICK on Local Area connection and select Properties. 3. highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click on Properties button. 4. post the result or upload a screenshot

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
Hi TF
![]() Thanks for all your help.. Sorry I got a phone call as I was replying last night and missed the other items in your reply. It's a little hard to post information because the laptop can't access this site. But I'll do what I can. Yes, I have gone through all the IE, TCP/IP, etc.. properties and comparing them with my desktop. IE 7 right now, only one loaded ipconfig: connection-specific DNS suffix: woh.rr.com IP address : 192.168.1.102 subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 default gateway: 192.168.1.1 TCP/IP = Obtain an IP address automatically checked or dotted Obtain DNS server address automatically checked or dotted The advanced tab is also set just like me desktop I brought home an external ethernet card tonight from work that my IT person says works just fine and it does the same thing. So I don't believe the internal card is going bad.

hi caddman,
are you using a router or are you directly connected to the cable modem?

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
Right now I am using my router so that me desktop and my daughters wireless laptop is also connected.. But when I was trying this over the weekend before I posted my problems I was directly connected to the modem.. RR support requires that I disconnect from the router before trouble shooting..

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
When I asked my local IT person if they had a external card I could take home, I had to explain why I was asking.. Since I can ping yahoo by it's IP address and not by it's web address, they suggested that I flush the DNS.. Of course, that didn't help..

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
Well not a router router connection, if that is even possable.. Just one router with two other computers accessing the net.. wireless laptop and hard wire desktop..

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
Perhaps the RR support was correct when they said based on what they are seeing across the line coming to my house they can't believe that I have a computer accessing the net right now..

). you can ping the IP as you said right? can you browse the net if you use the IP instead of the name?-- btw, have you tried that (your laptop) in another location (like in the office) and try your connection there? if it works there, then there must be problem with your set up (router and cable modem) at home.

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
No the RR support can see my, they said something about in last 24 hours, they are seeing the my router rebooted something like 9,000+ times.. can't recall the exact number but it was in the 9,000 + range..
Yes I can ping via IP addresses but can't not brows via IP..

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
you said you got this laptop with XP already installed, and you just made room for your files right? Was IE able to browse the net before you got this?
anyhow this would look unrelated but for the meantime try this: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=299357 if this does not work, try it in another location like the office. i still think it is a firewall that locked down port 80.

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
hi CADDman,
i reread your original post. you can ping the IP but not the name. looks like a DNS problem too. anyway i hope you tried the steps in the Microsoft kb document.

Re: 3com fast ethernet not allowing me to surf the net, maybe
Hi TriggerFinger
![]() Thanks for the link... I ran the netsh int ip reset and nothing.. Then I ran the netsh winsock reset and walla-walla-bing-bang she be surf'in... ![]() ![]() ![]() I got it all working this morning why I was waiting on my Time Warner 4hr. window.. When the guy called to say he was on his way he actually asked if I was still having a problem connecting to the net.. I told him no, but then explained that the tier 3 person indicated that something was wrong with my line and modem... He showed up and ran some test and said the line and modem was fine.. We started talking about the problem and I told him how I got it working, with the help from this site.. He said he didn't even know what those commands did anyway and chances where that he would have had to call for help from tier 3 anyway.. Once again, you guys have done an outstanding job... I knew I would find a god here.....![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks again for all your help..
