Red Faced No Power thru DC Jack unless I find the "sweet spot"

Hi folks,

It's a Gateway MT6705, but hoping you can provide some insight here.

I seem to have damaged the jack by sometimes shoving the machine into my laptop bag with the powercord still attached. I'm often rushing around to appts, but tsk tsk on me.

It's still covered under P&S with BestBuy, but they'll need to send it for 2 weeks. Ouch. I'm self employed, so no loaner is to be had. I know it's getting power when the batt-charging indicator illuminates, but it's very fiddly. I mostly have to charge at home, then rely on the battery all day.

Does anyone have a creative work-around I could try? Also, should I expect this to get worse over time?

Thanks! Midge

hi Midge,

best way is replace the DC jack. how does the DC jack (AC side) looks like for your model?

Re: No Power thru DC Jack unless I find the "sweet spot"

5 or 6 thin metal tabs form a cup shape around the pin. A tiny wire ring at the edge (almost flush with the case) seems to be holding the "petals" in place.

If this were a piece of hifi equipment, my natural inclination would be to open the case to examine it more closely. Then it might become evident that the thing has been bent and can be prodded back into shape. Alternatively, it might be dislodged and in need of re-soldering.

If I open the case for a closer look, that would probably void my contract with BestBuy to some extent. Is there some type of seal in certain models, whereby they'd know it had been opened? This is more out of curiousity than anything. I probably would not attempt any repair myself.

Thanks for answering, Midge

Hi Midge,

If you have it still under warranty, it is best to return it to BestBuy rather than doing it yourself out of curiosity.
