Question Averatec 6240 Shut down problem

My laptop keeps shutting itself down in the middle of opertions. Some days it works fine, other days every 5 minutes it shuts itself down. It is plugged in, so not a battery problem. Otherwise the computer works fine. Any suggestions?

Re: Averatec 6240 Shut down problem

hi robinnjohnson,

reseat your RAM just to be sure they are plugged in securely. then test your RAM with Memtest86+. download link from my sig below. download the ISO image and burn it to CD. use the CD to boot from CD drive. RAM test will commence after boot up.

do you notice unusually warm air (almost hot to the touch) coming out of the vents?

Re: Averatec 6240 Shut down problem

From the beginning hot air has come out of my vents, everyone tells me some laptops are hotter than others. Is this an indicaiton of a problem? I'll see if one of my co-workers who is computer saavy can follow your instructions and see if it helps. Thanks. Rob

Is this an indicaiton of a problem? -- you are right some are hotter than others. and no, it is not usually an indication of the problem. best way is to do a visual check if your vents and heatsink are clogged up with dirt, dust or what have you. And if they are, give them a very good clean. I'll see if one of my co-workers who is computer saavy can follow your instructions and see if it helps. Thanks. Rob
