[SOLVED] please help: one of two AMD TL-50 CPU stuck to 100% usage[MOVED FROM WINDOWS
I got a Dell Inspiron 1501 with vista, 2GB ram, AMD Turion 64x2 Mobile Technology TL-50 1.6GHz CPU.
It was OK for 1 year. But two days ago I got a big problem. Usually after I start my laptop for less than 1 hour, it becomes extremely slow. I can't even watch a video. Task manage shows that one of the 2 CPUs is almost always with 100% usage, while the other one is OK: 5% to 100%. "Speedfan" shows my CPU tem is 41-43c I carefully scanned for virus and looked up the processes list. Only system Idle took more than 50% CPU usage. There is no unknown thing going on. But System Idle's 50% plus usage + other processes always bring the entire CPU usage to nearly 100% percent. I could hardly even type in the above words! I have tried to system-restore to one week ago. Problem still exists I know here are an expert forum. Some one please help! |

Re: please help: one of two AMD TL-50 CPU stuck to 100% usage
Locate Startup Problems in Windows XP Using a Controlled Method
The following steps provide a controlled method to determine the application that is causing problems with your computer: Click Start and then Run. Type msconfig, and click OK to display the System Configuration Utility window. Verify that Normal Startup is selected. If the Selective Startup is selected, ensure that the Load Startup Items checkbox is checked. Click the Startup tab. Click to uncheck the top five programs listed, and make sure to leave all other programs checked. Click Apply and then Close to display a dialogue box that prompts you to restart the computer. Click Restart, and monitor your computer's performance. Repeat steps 1-3 if the problem still exists. If the problem still exists, then the five unchecked programs have been ruled out as possible sources of the problem. Click to uncheck the next five programs, making sure to leave all other programs checked. Click Apply and then Close. Click Restart, and monitor your computer's performance. Repeat steps 1-3 and 8-10 until the problem no longer occurs, which means that a program in the last group of disabled programs may be causing the problem. Click to recheck one of the disabled programs in the last group. Click Apply and then Close. Click Restart, and monitor your computer's performance. Repeat steps 1-3 and 12-14 until the problem reoccurs. The last enabled program may be causing the problem with your computer. Click to recheck all of the other disabled items. You probably need to perform additional troubleshooting on the program to determine how to resolve the problem |

Re: please help: one of two AMD TL-50 CPU stuck to 100% usage
First of all stop the suprfetching service
1. Start\Run and type Services.msc and hit enter 2. Scrool to Superfetch 3. select Stop from the left hand side 4. Double click and under the starup type, select Disable you will notice a huge improvement already Regards Craig

Re: please help: one of two AMD TL-50 CPU stuck to 100% usage[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Thank you all for the reply!
I have tried very hard I really doubt what you have mentioned is the problem I have. I m sure the only think took up my CPU time is the "system Idle". I have upload two pictures. In the first one you could see "system idle" took about 60% of my largest CPU capcity. The second picture showed that actually right side CPU has literally stopped working and the usage line is always on the very top, where as the left one looks OK. ![]() I am thinking the CPU is overheated as it only happens when I turn on my computer for a while, but "Speedfan" shows the timperature is arround 41c. ![]() BTW, I have tried to scan my entire system for virus and tried system restore. Don't work Any comments are welcome! |

Re: please help: one of two AMD TL-50 CPU stuck to 100% usage[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
hi buyao0,
assuming your operating system is 'OK' (sorry for a lack of a better word). also assuming this is not some malware or virus or something of that nature. let us say this could probably be hardware related, test your RAM for errors is (IMHO) the first logical step. your RAM may not be dead totally but it can happen that it has errors, leaving you with a very slow system. you have nothing to lose anyway so i suggest you try it. d/load Memtest86+ from my sig. below and burn the image into CD. boot from that CD to start the RAM diagnostics. you also suspected at first that it can be overheating. most often than not, overheating will shut your system down (as in OFF). and obviously your temp readings showed you are still running on acceptable levels. but just to be sure, get a can of compressed air and give it a few boosts thru the vents and heatsink. if you see a some amount of dust fly off, it could be time to give it a good clean (not necessarily related to your system being slow). do post back what happens...

they dxdiag file does not show what ati card it is hmm
i think if i was u i would go to ati's site and update the drivers and i would also try to find out what type of sound card u as that all it says in the dxdiag file's (Speakers (High Definition Audio Device) ) heres the download area for ur laptop http://support.dell.com/support/down...WW1&hidlang=en and here are drivers from Ati site http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_ca...grated-vista32 so i would start by updateing the video card and sound card the video card is onbroard reminder make for sure that u download the right video / sound card drivers ((im not will sure how to find drivers for moblie pc's yet im trying to figer that out lol))

Re: please help: one of two AMD TL-50 CPU stuck to 100% usage[MOVED FROM WINDOWS]
Thank you guys for the time. It is the most professional and friendly technical forum I ve ever been.
I ve solve the problem, at least now. Here is the story I tried to burn the iso file to several CD, but none of them could start the computer. Then I fully scaned my hardware by it's own diagnostic program but didn't find any errors. Neither does newest video card driver help. Finally I reintalled my system. Bingo. My thought is vista is a crappy system. My old install also has other weird problem, such as when you push ctrl when notepad or adobe reader is the activated window, notepad or adobe will shut down. I can't adjust brightness after I hibernated and restart my system. The system often hibernates by itself without any clue, until I inactivated all the hibernate function. Finally, my conclusion is, for weird problem, reinstall is a great weapon ![]() Quote:

hi,
that is good news that you were able to figure it out... on the burning the ISO to CD, what tool did you use? copying it directly to CD would not make a bootable CD. you should burn the image to CD using Nero or ImgBurn (see my sig for the link). anyhow, glad to know you were able to fix it. you can mark this thread as solved.

I know iso fill can not be copy but have to be burned. But I could still be wrong as I just used the "burn a cd“ function of vista. But anyway, I could learn it latter.
