Gateway power failure
I have a gateway laptop that occasionally powers up, after booting and running for about 5 min the laptop lossed power no power light no power. I know it is not the power jack or power supply cord as i can measure voltage there and it works good on another laptop, I just bought a new battery and it is charged up, I still can get no power. I just don't know what else is wrong, I was thinking maybe there is a power circuit board or something. can you help?

Re: Gateway power failure
hi commandersteve,
Welcome to TSF ![]() do you notice anything like it is overheating? five minutes is more than enough time for the CPU to heat up if the fan is not working and the heatsink/vents are coated with dust and what have you. you can check the vents for obstruction. Also get a can of compressed air and give it some pretty good boosts thru the air vents. there are other things you can try (assuming this is not an overheat issue) to check if it is caused by other things (i.e.the HDD or the RAM). first try to reseat your RAM modules. then run diagnostics like Memtest86+ to test your RAM. you can d/load Memtest86+ ISO image from http://www.memtest.org. burn the ISO image into CD. once done, you can boot from that CD and the diagnostics will begin immediately. i think this is it for now.. try them and do post back whatever the result.

Re: Gateway power failure
I tried reseting the ram modules and hard drive. I also removed each component and then tried to turn on the computer but no help. And no the computer is out of warranty. thanks for your help. Also the computer doesn't even get a chance to turn on to even try an overheating problem.

Re: Gateway power failure
check the power ON button. the button itself in most cases is just a cover that you can press. there is a switch below it. if the button panel can be opened up, open it to expose the switch. some switches are on the motherboard while some are on a switch board wired on the mobo. check the switch and the cables.
