Presario V5000 Monitor Issue... TY!

Hi!

To make a long story short, I have a nearly-two-year-old Compaq Presario V5000 laptop, widescreen (15.4 I think).

It works *almost* normally, except for the fact that when any pressure is applied to the hinges (i.e. opening or closing the laptop, or adjusting the screen) the monitor starts freaking out a bit, and horizontal lines start shooting across the screen, and images jump around (i.e. the lower half of the screen will jump up to the middle or top, etc).

Also, I dont know if this will tell you anything, but the bottom half seems to be more affected than the top half of the monitor. Im really hoping this is just a frayed wire or something that I can just tape up, heh!

Thanks in advance for whatever help you guys can offer! :)

Sounds like a bad ribbon cable. Easy enough to replace. At two years old though it should have lasted a lot longer than that. Perhaps the connections on either end is loose.

hi ebelsky,

looks like a mobo failure or the LCD. try hooking up an external monitor and see if symptoms persists.

Hi!

So I am currently looking at the external monitor as Im typing, and if I apply pressure on the hinges the laptop monitor still glitches, while the external one seems unaffected- everything looks fine.

Hope this helps...

Thanks again,

have you opened the laptop up? if you have done so, may be you have noticed that some cables pass thru the area where the hinges are, check if somehow the wire insulators are still any good. Check also for a loose connection between mobo and LCD.

Hope this helps...

Thanks again,

Re: Presario V5000 Monitor Issue... TY!

I actually found a guide online how to open my laptop, screws list and everything. I dont really know anything - in fact I know nothing - but mabe Ill give it a shot.

I just figured out that mobo stands for motherboard, guess Im learning, lol.

Last question (I hope)... If the wires are frayed or whatever, will it be noticable on the outside of the wires?

Thanks so much!

Last question (I hope)... If the wires are frayed or whatever, will it be noticable on the outside of the wires? -- if you open the laptop up (lcd bezel, top lid, etc.), you will see wires that go from the LCD itself to the mobo. usually it is covered/insulated. to answer, yes, you will see it. visual inspection will do. pay particular attention on the part of the hinges where the cables pass through. Also at both ends of this cable, there is a connector (one plugs into the mobo, the other on the LCD, check them if they are still plugged in securely).

by the way, you may need this service manual as a reference when you disassemble your system...

Thanks so much!

Re: Presario V5000 Monitor Issue... TY!

I have the same laptop and have had the same trouble. It started of just flickering, and getting worse when opening and closing, now the only way I can use it is with an external monitor hooked up to it.

I did some research and currently have the laptop display apart, I can't see any wear on the cable where it is by the hinges, but with the cover over the wires it is hard to tell. I made sure everything was in snug too. I think it is the display cable, I wish I knew for sure, because I would hate to buy it and that not be the issue. Does anyone know were a good placer to buy odd laptop parts like that?
