Presario 2200 Boot issue

Hello I've had this Compaq Presario 2200 laptop for roughly 4 years. I have had this problem once in the past. but it started a few days later.

Basically what happend is I came back to my computer after going to the grocery store. and the computer was off. the Charge light was green meaning a full charge. I regularly discharge the battery. I do not believe the problem is the battery or the AC adapter. When I plug my ac adapter the Z light.. which looks like a lighting bolt icon above (not the on light) Flickers amber. Same thing when I remove my battery and put it back in.. The amber light will also flash when I hit the reset button on the bottom of the laptop.

Anyway, I cannot make the thing start. cannot make the hard drive spin. no lights come on when I press the power button.

I've tried a number of things like.. Hold down the start button.. Remove the battery hold down the start button let it sit for 10 -30 minutes. Put battery back in press start. Nothing.

Does the fact that the Reset button causes the amber light to flash rule out a CPU meltdown or a busted board?

Once again.. this has happened before and I came back a few days later and it started. I have had absolutely no problems with this laptop for the past 3-4 years. I've heard issues about the Capacitators blowing. and the DC/DC powersupplys giving out. I can replace these things but I am not sure where to start.

One other thing. I had a ipod charging on it as I was gone that was removed without properly "safely removing usp device" triggered. Does the Ipod pull enough current to cause a hardware failiure? the laptop was grounded but not plugged into a surge protector at the time.

Anyway.. Did my best to go into detail any help is appriciated.

Re: Presario 2200 Boot issue

hi ylekyotemike,

Reset button did not work? How about trying to reset using the following:
1. remove battery and unplug from AC source(outlet and laptop).
2. press power ON button for 30secs or so. release and leave for 30secs more.
3. attach battery and plug AC source (laptop and outlet)
4. press power ON as normal.

if still it does not work, remove battery and use AC alone. also try running on battery alone (AC unplugged) if you have not done this yet.

have you tried opening it up? get hold of the service manual for that model as a reference. check the power button, on its bottom side is something that pushes the switch on the motherboard. check if it still makes good contact. check also the side of the motherboard where the switch is (the part which the power button pushes down to switch ON the system). with the power OFF (unplug battery and unplug AC), use a long plastic tool with pointed ends (something like a plastic ball point pen) to push the switch.

If you want to do this with AC power ON, be cautious as there is a danger of an electric shock.
