Hello I'm having some serious trouble

I just buy a Toshiba protege m200 off of ebay, and it doesn't boot up. can someone please tell me what I need to do in order to get an OS on this computer? I have a 2 gig SD, and I also have a hp dvd1040 via usb cable dvd/cd player with lightscribe. The Computer came with no book disks, and the message on the computer reads the following:"

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel Boot Agent.
Insert system disk in drive.
Press any key when ready.... "

any help on this topic would be much appreciated. I've been searching for a boot installing guide for days now with no luck. please anyone can tell me how to heal this issue????

Thanks

Jason Andrew Buividas

Re: Hello I'm having some serious trouble

Hello and welcome to the forum

It sounds like the drive has been formated or is not installed. Can you verify that the notebook has a hard drive installed? . . look in BIOS for the drive.

What operating system do you wish to install? . . do you have the installation disc?

Re: Hello I'm having some serious trouble

i would like to install windows 2000 or windows XP... all i have is a 2 gig SD card, and the USB cd/dvd... no i didnt get any installation disc nor boot discs. I don't know if there was a previous OS installed. I can access BIOS, but it doesn't say anything about the OS.

so you mean there is no hard drive installed? if you can access bios, does it say anything there that it supports USB or booting from USB attached devices?

Re: Hello I'm having some serious trouble

in boot priority it gives me these options

Boot priority = HDD>FDD>CD-ROM>LAN <- those can be changed to any order )
HDD Priority = Built-in HDD >PC Card <- those can be reversed)
Network Boot Protocol = PXE < - can be changed to RPL )

ok... hmmm could you check your BIOS settings again (not the boot priority section) if there is any parameter where you can enable USB support? sometimes in laptops this comes as disabled and you must change it so the system can boot from an external USB CD drive. also consider updating your BIOS.

regarding the 2GB SD card... i really doubt if you can use that as a boot source.

going back to the hard drive, have you checked if physically there is one installed?

Re: Hello I'm having some serious trouble

Take a look in the BIOS for a setting that allows booting from USB . . set that to first boot device, put in the Installation CD and see if you can install XP . . You will have to delete any existing partitions, then create the one(s) you want, format and install. Hollar if you need a more detailed guide

Re: Hello I'm having some serious trouble

Strange that a laptop that comes with only an external cd will not boot from it . . Did you look thru all the BIOS options?
